Senior Reflections Week 22 2024

Dear parents,

Pastoral restructure and house names

You will have seen our communications about the pastoral restructure and house names. I am very grateful to parents who have been in touch, and the many messages that have been received as this has been featured in the news. We are currently considering the feedback and responses that we have received and the board will be making a final decision later this month. If you feel you would like to give your views, please do contact us.

School history

On the subject of school history, this week some of the Fourth Form have visited the alumni and development office to look in the archives and find out something about history of the school from its early days to today. Alice Holohan, our Director of Alumni Relations and Development was able to tell them something about the key figures in our history, and chart the development of the school site from buildings at the heart of the city to the large site that we enjoy in St Leonard’s today. I hope that they found it interesting. Coincidentally, it is Founders Day in just two weeks’ time. This is the annual celebration in the cathedral of those who established the school and gave so much both in a philanthropic sense, as visionaries, and in developing the academic excellence. An important day for us all.

Exeter Living Awards

We are delighted to have been shortlisted for an Exeter Living Award this year – for our civic contributions to the local community. Your children do so much good within the charities and community service aspects of the school’s provision and it is something which we are very proud of. The competition for the award was tough and sadly we were pipped to the post by Conversation Café, a wonderful arts project in town who works closely with the Ukrainian refugee community. We are proud to be partners of Conversation Café and we currently have an art exhibition from our young artist collective on display in their window. You can see it on Paris Street if you are interested. We congratulate all involved at the Conversation Café on their great work in supporting the refugee community.

Upper Sixth parents

It was a pleasure to see so many of you here at school last evening to talk to your children’s teachers about their progress now that they have got their trial A Level results. I heard lots of positive and engaging conversations and hope that the meeting was helpful for all concerned. As ever, please do get in touch if you have any concerns after the meeting – Heads of house or Mr Chu will be very happy to help you.

Senior prefects

On Saturday morning we will be interviewing 39 members of the Lower Sixth for senior prefect positions. As ever, it has been enlightening to read their applications, and very difficult to select the large field (the majority of the year group applied) to have this number for interview. I look forward to talking to them all tomorrow and wish them all the best with this process. New senior prefects will be announced on the last day of term.

This weekend

We have a full fixture card for both hockey and netball against Queen’s College, Taunton, this Saturday, and we wish all those playing every success, both home and away. Sunday sees the rugby sevens first and U16 teams head off to the West of England tournament and we hope, too, that they have an enjoyable and successful time. The Choral Society will be rehearsing for one last Sunday rehearsal ahead of the concert in the cathedral on Wednesday 13 March. Please do buy your tickets for his event here – the music is spectacular, and the setting will make it all the more wonderful.  We hope to see you there.

Thank you for your support, and have a lovely weekend.

World Book Day and Get Reading Week

World Book Day 2024 brought a whirlwind of excitement and literary creativity to our school. Staff and pupils in junior school embraced the spirit of the occasion by dressing as their favourite book characters, filling the school with colour, laughter, and animation. Our senior school library hosted events throughout the week. Story corners were hosted every day in the library with various staff members reading parts of their favourite books aloud. Pupils took part in new book release sessions, charity book sales, quizzes, author visits and the ‘Sam Sedgman Express Carriage Competition’. The competition called for artistic pictures of additional train carriages which were put up above the library desk creating a long train display. The lucky winners were Connie and Leia from 3F. The Big Book Quiz was won by a team called ‘Geese with Knives’, which was Eve (L5), Penny (L5), Lily (U5) and Molly (M5).

On World Book Day itself, author Sam Sedgman led captivating workshops for Third Form, igniting imaginations and leading us on thrilling storytelling adventures. He discussed his latest release, “The Clockwork Conspiracy,” and captivated our junior school with tales from his award-winning series “Adventures on Trains,” co-authored with M. G. Leonard. Sam’s insights into real-life research, including visits to the National Train Museum, and his theatrical demonstration of a steam engine left our audiences awestruck and eager to learn more. Don’t forget to explore our library, well-stocked with all of Sam’s works!

We plan to hold onto the true essence of World Book Day all year round: celebrating the joy of reading and recognising the power of a good book and look forward to Ele Fountain’s visit to school on 21 March.

Alumnus Steve Dukes (1992-1997), CEO of @confused_com, returned to school this week to give an assembly. He advised pupils about aspiring to reach their goals, using negatives to fuel your journey. He said, 'when you’re at school, being called names like ‘odd, weird and awkward’ can often mean something completely different in adult life - these words become ‘creative, unusual and innovative’. His top advice was to become like a sponge, find what learning method works best for you, learn fast and act on it. Great advice Steve - thanks so much for visiting us! @exeterschool_alumni #visitingspeakers

While it was hard to get a good photo of our sixth form linguists attending an online conference on Wednesday, pupil Sophia's feedback was that "it was really good to see how linguistics goes into so many areas and how some things seemingly unrelated (so far away from linguistics) can have a big/strong connection with linguistics." They were treated to four diverse talks, ranging from how AI can help us learn foreign languages, how forensic linguistics can help compare different texts and ascertain if the same person wrote both texts (helpful in identifying and profiling criminals), how idioms are processed in our brains and used in social discourse, and how dormant languages can be reclaimed. The talks were 25 minutes each with a Q&A afterwards. As well as being informative, these talks allowed pupils to see what a course of study or a career in linguistics might look like. Many thanks to @oxfordhighschoolgdst for running the event. #onlineconference #linguisticsevent #forensiclinguistics #exeterschools #independentschoolsuk #sixthformlife

Huge congratulations to Jack (U6) who continues to excel with his sailing and has recently been selected for 29er British Sailing Youth Team. The British Sailing Youth Team is an annual programme designed to support and develop the best sailors in the UK. The focus of the programme is to ensure sailor learning and individuals develop to fulfil their potential within the sport. There are a small number of boats in the team, and selection has been very competitive this year. Jack also competed in the European Championships in Garda in July. He had also sailed at the Worlds in Porto. We can’t wait to hear about Jack’s progress. #exeterschoolsport #exeterschool #schoolofgreatcharacter

First competitive fixture of the season for our swimmers. Our teams competed at the South West regional round of the ESSA relays held at Millfield last Wednesday. The school fielded teams in all age groups with 8 pupils competing for the school for the first time. The senior teams performed particularly well, putting themselves in the running to make the national finals later in the term! @exeterschooluk #exeterschoolsport #swimming #swimfast #essaswimming
