Senior Reflections Week 1 September 2025

Dear parents,

It has been a real pleasure to welcome our pupils back to school this week, and to extend a particularly warm welcome to all those who are joining us for the very first time. I hope that everyone has already begun to settle into the rhythm of the new school year with enthusiasm, optimism and confidence.

Uniform

One of the joys of the start of term is seeing our pupils looking so smart and ready to learn. From our youngest children in pre-prep, through the junior school, and into the senior school, it has been wonderful to see the pride they take in wearing their uniforms. A special mention must also go to our new Lower Sixth, who have stepped up into sixth form with positivity and purpose; they look very professional in their suits and business-like attire! Following some queries from parents we will shortly be sending clarification and additional guidance on appropriate footwear. Thank you all for your support in maintaining these high standards, we will continue to keep a close eye to ensure they are upheld throughout the year.

Events

We are looking forward to an exciting programme of events in the coming days. This weekend sees the start of the fixtures calendar, which I know many pupils have been eagerly anticipating. Today, our Third Form (Year 7) pupils take part in their induction event, followed on Monday afternoon by the Lower Fifth (Year 9) induction. These occasions are an important part of welcoming pupils into the next stage of their school journey and helping them to build strong connections.

I would also like to take this opportunity to warmly remind parents of the informal events next week, which provide an opportunity for you to meet me as Head, connect with one another, and enjoy time with members of our wider school community. There will be no speeches I promise!

  • Wednesday 17 September, 8.30 – 9.15am in Andrews Hall
  • Thursday 18 September, 4.00 – 4.45pm in Butterfield Hall (or on the field, weather permitting)

Trying new things

In my start-of-term assembly to senior school pupils, I encouraged them to push themselves to try something new this term and I know Mr Ayling and Mrs Van will be doing something similar. This might mean sitting with someone different in lessons, borrowing a book from a different author from the library, exploring a new sport, or taking up a musical opportunity. For our older pupils, there is still time to audition for Grease, and in senior school, next Wednesday’s clubs and societies fair will be the perfect occasion for pupils to broaden their horizons by signing up to something new.

Open morning

Looking slightly further ahead, I would like to give early notice of our open morning on Saturday 27 September. In senior school, we expect all pupils in sixth form, Fourth Form (Year 8) and Lower Fifth (Year 9) to attend, while pupils in other year groups are very welcome to join us too. Some pupils in other years will also be invited to take part in special activities, such as CCF and DofE, to help showcase the breadth of opportunities we offer. We will also have rugby and hockey matches taking place for some year groups. In the junior school, pupils in Lower Two (Year 5) and Upper Two (Year 6) will be involved with touring prospective parents and helping in the classrooms, more information will be shared from Mr Wood, shortly.

As always, our pupils will play a vital role in supporting departments with their displays and activities, as well as guiding prospective families around the school. Please note that on Friday 26 September lessons will finish early: senior school at 3.20pm, junior school at 3.45pm, with no after-school activities or late room. Buses will leave at the usual time.

It has been a hugely positive start to the year, with pupils approaching school life with great energy. I am very much looking forward to the months ahead, and to celebrating the many achievements and successes that lie before us.

New school uniform

We have loved seeing so many pupils wearing our new uniform from Schoolblazer. There is a 20% discount on all blazers until 30 September 2025 so if you don’t have one yet, there is still time to order with the discount.

Exonian Quiz

On Friday 3 October, the school is hosting the Exonian Quiz – written by longstanding teacher John Davidson and alumnus Steve Perring, and hosted by Mrs Sail and Mr Trelawny. Parents, alumni, teachers and Sixth Form pupils are all invited.

Alumnus Steve Dukes (1992-1997), CEO of @confused_com, returned to school this week to give an assembly. He advised pupils about aspiring to reach their goals, using negatives to fuel your journey. He said, 'when you’re at school, being called names like ‘odd, weird and awkward’ can often mean something completely different in adult life - these words become ‘creative, unusual and innovative’. His top advice was to become like a sponge, find what learning method works best for you, learn fast and act on it. Great advice Steve - thanks so much for visiting us! @exeterschool_alumni #visitingspeakers

While it was hard to get a good photo of our sixth form linguists attending an online conference on Wednesday, pupil Sophia's feedback was that "it was really good to see how linguistics goes into so many areas and how some things seemingly unrelated (so far away from linguistics) can have a big/strong connection with linguistics." They were treated to four diverse talks, ranging from how AI can help us learn foreign languages, how forensic linguistics can help compare different texts and ascertain if the same person wrote both texts (helpful in identifying and profiling criminals), how idioms are processed in our brains and used in social discourse, and how dormant languages can be reclaimed. The talks were 25 minutes each with a Q&A afterwards. As well as being informative, these talks allowed pupils to see what a course of study or a career in linguistics might look like. Many thanks to @oxfordhighschoolgdst for running the event. #onlineconference #linguisticsevent #forensiclinguistics #exeterschools #independentschoolsuk #sixthformlife
