Pre-Prep Reflections Week 23 2024

Dear parents,

It has been another busy week in school with visitors, theme days and Mr Ayling away at the IAPS pre-prep heads’ conference in Leicester on Thursday and Friday.

Fire safety visit

On Tuesday, Year 2 were visited by Gemma Skelley from the Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service who came into school to do a fire safety presentation. The session was very informative and I hope the children were able to share some of what they learnt with you at home.

Red Nose Day

Today, we celebrated Red Nose Day in school with a non-uniform day. Thank you to all those who bought noses and donated for the non-uniform day. If you have not yet donated but would like to, there is still time. Please send any donations into school on Monday. We also have a small number of red noses still available for £2. We look forward to sharing the total raised with you next week.

Science Day

This week has also been British Science Week, which we celebrated in classes with some special science workshops. Nursery explored the concepts of floating and sinking, Reception learnt about absorbency, while Year 1 and 2 took part in a carousel of different experiments. Our STEM Club leader, ‘Energy Edd’, also visited us at the end of the day for a special assembly.

Spring Reviews

We hope you have received your child’s spring review, which was sent home on Wednesday. If your child is in Nursery and they were not in school on Wednesday, it will be sent home with your child after their next session.

Next week

Parents’ Evening takes place next Wednesday 20 March after school. Please sign up for a meeting if you have not done so already. Please note that time slots are limited to 10 minutes. If you would prefer to book an online appointment or you think you might need a longer appointment on a different date, please let us know and we will always do our best to accommodate this.

We wish you all a lovely weekend whatever you are doing.

Spotlight on Year 2

In English, we have been learning all about instructions through the book ‘The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch’. The children particularly enjoyed performing as part of a class cookery show and creating recipes for disgusting sandwiches. In mathematics, we have been learning about position and direction and the children enjoyed using positional vocabulary to navigate a map of a zoo. The children have really been fascinated with our ‘Toys’ history topic. So far, it has included researching the history of LEGO; using an iPad to create a fact file; comparing modern day toys with older toys; and learning about the toys that children played with during Victorian times. In our computing lessons, we have continued to learn about how we can display data using computers. This week we learnt how to tally objects using a common attribute and present the data in the form of a pictogram. In DT, we have been focusing on which part of a picture in a story could move; we used sliders and levers to make the Gingerbread Man run as fast as he could!

Easter Theme Day Reminder

On Wednesday 27 March, the last day of the spring term, the children will spend the whole day off-timetable, taking part in Easter-themed activities. We would like to invite parents to come in at 3.00pm for a special Easter assembly, where the children will share some of their learning with you. This will be followed by a tea party in the hall in honour of Mrs Martin, as this will be her final day at Exeter Pre-Prep School. There is no need to book. We hope you will be able to join us and, if you would like to bring a nut-free cake, please feel free!

Charity Fun Run

In the final week of term, we are planning to hold a charity fun run event to raise further money for our friends at Westbank in Exminster. Our children seem to be very keen on running lately and so we thought we would try to run a marathon collectively, with all children and staff running laps of the school grounds on 25 or 26 March, weather permitting! Children could either be sponsored per lap or for the total distance they accumulate. Forms have been sent home today so that the children can approach family and friends for sponsorship – please check your child’s bookbag. We will then aim to collect the money after the Easter break. Thank you for your support.
