Children in maroon school uniforms bounce on small blue trampolines in a library-like room with bookshelves behind them.

Pre-Prep Reflections 24 April 2026

Dear parents,

Welcome back to the summer term! I hope you all had a relaxing Easter break. The children have eased into the new term by reconnecting with friends, and playing and learning in the sunshine. Reception had their first swimming lesson at Exeter School, Mrs Dray led her first singing assembly brilliantly, and I enjoyed my first session with the computing club, which it is my turn to run this term. We have also welcomed five new children to the school: Max, Luna, Lincoln and Melina in Nursery, and Aurelia in Year 1. As always, the summer term is an action-packed one, so please do keep an eye on the newsletter to stay up to date with all the exciting events that are taking place.

Easter holiday works

Thank you to the operations team who have been busy carrying out improvement work over the Easter holidays. The Year 1 classroom has been flipped around in readiness for refurbishment and expansion works over the summer holidays, and you may have noticed some resurfacing of the playground has taken place. We have re-stocked the shed with a range of new play equipment chosen by the school council, and we are gradually updating many of our reading scheme books with new copies where needed. Mr Titchin has also sourced and delivered a new electric piano for the hall, and our phone line has been upgraded, which will hopefully improve the quality of the line.

Sponsored Bounce

The highlight of the week was surely our Sponsored Bounce event on Tuesday, to raise money for Mrs Van who is running the London Marathon this Sunday for the NSPCC. The children did themselves proud by bouncing continuously on three mini-trampolines for the whole day! I was exhausted just watching them, but they clearly had so much fun and kept the energy going right up to the last minute. Mrs Van and Mr Bone both came over to cheer them on. All children who took part received a certificate and a record card showing how many minutes they completed. Thank you to those of you who have already returned the sponsor forms and money. The deadline for this is Friday 8 May, so there is still plenty of time. Please return the NSPCC sponsor form and cash to Mrs Landy in the school office. Alternatively, if you would prefer to donate online, you can do so directly through Mrs Van’s JustGiving page and note on the sponsor form that you have paid before returning it to us. Thank you so much for your support.

Next week

I look forward to meeting with the class reps on Monday morning. If you have any last-minute feedback that you would like them to share, I am sure they won’t mind you contacting them directly.

Fingers crossed for some sunny weather this weekend and good luck to Mrs Van for Sunday!

Mr Daniel Ayling

Spotlight on Reception

We can’t believe we are already in the summer term, which is going to be packed full of learning and fun! The children enjoyed their very first swimming lesson at Exeter School on Wednesday. They were all very excited to get into the pool and show us some of their swimming skills. Across the Early Years, we are starting a new topic on vehicles and transport. To support our learning, our focus book this week has been Mrs Armitage on Wheels. In literacy, the children have been designing, labelling and writing descriptive sentences about their own bikes. We enjoyed talking about some of the adventures they have been on whilst riding them. In phonics, the children have started learning the phase 4 sounds and this week they have been spotting adjacent consonants at the end of words. In mathematics, the children have been making links between their number bonds to 10 and subtraction, using part-whole models and tens frames to show their understanding. The children showed such determination during the Sponsored Bounce event on Tuesday, demonstrating some excellent bouncing on the trampolines. Thank you for all your support.

Introducing Mrs Howe

I am delighted to announce that Mrs Kalleigh Howe has been appointed to the role of co-deputy head and will join us in September. Leadership responsibilities will be shared with Ms Richards when she returns from maternity leave next year. Mrs Howe is currently living and working in Qatar, and is moving back to Devon with her family in June. She brings a wealth of experience from both the UK and overseas, and is currently Head of a six-form entry Nursery at Doha College, one of the largest leading international schools in Qatar. She has previously been Head of Reception and Deputy Head of Early Years there, while also being a class teacher. Prior to this, she spent three years at Dulwich College Shanghai where she was Head of Reception and Head of Phonics & Reading. She has also taught Year 1 at primary schools in Torquay and Eastbourne. Kalleigh’s warmth and authenticity really shone through and I know she is looking forward to visiting later in the term to meet everyone in person.

Sun safety

As the weather (hopefully) becomes hotter and sunnier this term, we will encourage children to drink plenty of water and play in the shade. Please may we also encourage parents and children to take the following precautions:

  • Wear a sun hat – these are available to buy from School Blazer or they can be of any sensible design. A wide brimmed hat that covers the face, ears and neck is recommended.
  • Wear sunglasses – again, any sensible design is allowed.
  • Wear sunscreen – SPF 50 with a 5-star UVA rating is recommended. Please apply before your child arrives at school. Children are welcome to bring in their own sunscreen to re-apply later in the day if needed. We find roll-on/stick varieties are the most child-friendly. Staff are unable to apply these, so please make sure they can do so themselves (under adult supervision).

It may be easier to keep these items in school on your child’s peg for the remainder of the term. As always, please ensure that all items are clearly labelled with your child’s name. Thank you.

Year 2 Leadership Roles

Congratulations to our Year 2 children who have been assigned the following leadership roles for this half term. Badges, lanyards and caps were presented in assembly this week and the children have already made a great start in their roles. These roles rotate every half term so that the children experience different responsibilities across the year.
