Junior Reflections Week 26 2024

Giving the gift of a bursary remains a vital part of life at Exeter School. This testimonial from a pupil supported by the direct grant system in the 1970s reminds us why we strive to offer the same life-changing opportunities today.

Four pupils, who recently graduated from the school, helped last week by making calls in a donation drive. They loved hearing older alumni recounting their experiences and memories of the school and we give thanks to all donations made to the bursary fund so far.

Alumnus Freddie Crowley, (2008-2014), is looking forward to directing another successful @whiddonautumnfestival this year and we encourage you to get tickets to the event on 17-21 September.

We`re pleased to hear that his experiences at Exeter School have shaped his career into something he loves today. He says, "My musical experiences at Exeter School played a huge part in my journey to becoming a professional musician, particularly because of the great variety of musical styles I was able to throw myself into at school. It was hugely formative for me as a teenager to have a music department where I could sing every week in the Chamber Choir and Vocal Ensemble, while also playing in the school’s orchestras, jazz bands, and samba drumming group, as well as getting involved in school plays and musicals. Teachers like Julian Sutton, Peter Tamblyn, Steve Crossen and Stephanie & Andrzej Chrupek were all incredible mentors along the path to developing my musicianship and confidence as a performer."

We hope our pupils are getting out and about and exploring just like our Form One and Upper One pupils did on their trip to @paigntonzoo a couple of weeks ago.

Falling on the penultimate day of the academic year, it really highlights the lasting memory of what we heard they enjoy most throughout the year - experiencing learning outside of the classroom and interacting with each other.

While our Navy cadets were steering the Scillonian, our RAF campers were at Inskip cadet training centre near Preston.

Exeter School joined CCF units from four other schools for a week packed full of activities.

Sunday: Arrivals, briefing, games and icebreakers
Monday: climbing, air rifle shooting, low ropes, drill, flight simulators, VR, STEM,
Tuesday: Paintball, DCCT, rifle range, sports, camp photo, drill
Weds: Raft building, Paddle-boarding, Kayaking, movie night
Thurs: Orienteering, RAF Outreach
Fri: Blackpool Pleasure Beach, drill competition, awards, social
Saturday: goodbyes and return

It was an amazing week packed with activities and the cadets had a great time making friends from across the country. Thanks to all who helped shape memories that will stay with them.

Last week Rufus, Finlay, Harvard, George, Tilly, Rosie, Niamh, Amelie, Max and Nathan attended the annual Exeter @royalnavy summer camp at HMS Raleigh which was their home the week. We used it as a springboard for day trips to Salcombe for Coasteering, HMS Drake, a dockyard tour and out to Plymouth breakwater and up the river Tamar. They watched a recruit pass out parade, took part in an obstacle course, and raced each other on blow karts.

The highlight of the trip was that they boarded the Scillonian 3 where our lucky enthusiastic cadets took part in various seamanship tasks on the way to and back from the Isles of Scilly, which also included steering the boat whilst passengers were onboard. A huge shout out to the crew of the Scillonian and @islesofscillytravel who were very accommodating to our cadets and to Mr Collard for organising.

It`s easy to see why, when asked what their favourite part of the school year is, our junior school pupils respond with `trips` and `residentials`.

Here`s a flashback to last Tuesday when Lower Two went out on the water at @havenbanksoec. Making sure there was something that everyone felt comfortable in/on, there was a mix of stand up paddle boards, sit on tops, bell-boating and a blast on the climbing wall to dry off.

We hope they`re continuing the outdoor pursuits they`ve been inspired with here during the summer break. Thanks @havenbanksoec for looking after them! ...
