Pre-Prep Reflections Week 32 June 2025

Dear parents,

I hope you all had a great half term. A very warm welcome to Miss Mulchrone who joined us this week in the Nursery to cover Mrs Wannell’s maternity leave – very timely, as you will see in the article below! The final half of the summer term is always a busy and exciting one, with emotions running high for many of our children, as they prepare for the transition to their next class. My advice is to buckle up, enjoy the ride and don’t forget to read your Friday newsletters…

INSET day

On Monday, we had our final staff INSET day of the year over at Exeter School. These days are rare and valuable opportunities for the whole staff to be together, and we were able to spend some time reflecting strategically on what we want our approach to learning and teaching to be across the pre-prep, junior and senior schools. As well as some health and safety training, we enjoyed a fascinating talk from David Brown, Head of Weston Green School in Surrey, on his ‘quiet revolution’. This is focused on reminding schools that an estimated 40% of pupils are on the introverted spectrum and have a great deal to offer and celebrate.

Theatre trip

The highlight of the week was our whole school theatre trip on Wednesday morning. We went to see The Koala Who Could at the Palace Theatre in Paignton. The children were very excited to travel by coach and minibus, and they behaved extremely well throughout the trip. Sadly, we were unable to have a picnic lunch when we got back to school, as it was raining, but we all enjoyed our packed lunches in the hall.

Year 2 swimming

A reminder that the group of children who were swimming before half term have one final lesson with Mr Dutch next Monday, before the groups change over again for the last 4 weeks of term. The dates for the second group’s sessions are 16, 23, 30 June and 7 July. Apologies for the typo in the original letter which listed one of these dates incorrectly.

Sweetie bags

Thank you for all the amazing sweetie bags we have had back this week. They all looked brilliant on display in the library area and are ready to be sold on our stall at the Family Society Summer Fete tomorrow from 1pm. Well done to all the children for adding such unique and imaginative decorations to their sweetie bags. It was very difficult for the judges to choose the winning designs. Congratulations to Bonnie (Nursery), Nikola (Reception), Bea (Year 1) and Martha (Year 2) who were each awarded a prize in assembly today.

Please note that I will be out of school for a conference in London on Tuesday. Have a lovely weekend and hope to see you at the summer fete tomorrow.

Spotlight on Nursery

This week in Nursery, we have started our new topic on holidays. Our story of the week has been Topsy and Tim go on an Aeroplane. In literacy, the children have enjoyed sharing their experiences of going on an aeroplane, or other transport, to get to their holiday destinations. In mathematics, we have been looking at repeating patterns, and the children have amazed us with their ability to continue, copy and create their own patterns. We have really enjoyed getting to know Miss Mulchrone this week, and we have also managed to get outside and play on the balance bikes with Mr Ayling. The children particularly enjoyed the trip to the theatre on Wednesday morning. They were all so well behaved and we were very proud of them. We would also like to send all our love and congratulations to Mrs Wannell and her family on the arrival of baby Margot.

Mrs Wannell’s baby

You may have heard that Mrs Wannell had her baby on 1 June – a week earlier than expected and on her birthday! Baby Margot was born weighing 8lbs ½oz. Mum and baby are both doing well, and Clark is enjoying being a big brother. Many congratulations on the new addition to the family and we look forward to meeting Margot soon.

End of Year Events

Transition afternoon

On Wednesday 2 July, all children will be moving up to their next classroom to spend the afternoon with their new teachers and teaching assistants. Any new children due to join the school in September are also invited to this event. At the end of the day, parents are welcome to come into the classrooms for an informal ‘meet the teacher’ session, where we will provide some further information about the year ahead. If you are unable to attend, please do not worry, we will ensure the information is sent home to you. Current Year 2 pupils who are going to Exeter School next year will be transported over to the junior school for the afternoon.

Sports Day

Mrs Smyth is planning a whole week of sports events from Monday 30 June, culminating in our annual Sports Day on Friday 4 July. This event is held outside from 1.30-3.30pm and all parents are welcome to attend. There will be no football club after school, but STEM club will run in the hall. Fingers crossed for good weather!

Parent drop-in

On Monday 7 July, we will be holding our final parent drop-in of the year from 3pm. All parents are welcome to come into your child’s classroom and look at a selection of their work from this year. You will then be able to take most of their books and folders home, so please bring a strong carrier bag that can hold heavy items.

Summer showcase and prize giving

On Tuesday 8 July, all children will be taking part in our annual summer showcase in the hall, which parents are invited to attend. This starts at 2.30pm and will include performances from each class, soloists and whole school singing. We will also be presenting every child with a personalised certificate recognising their individual achievements this year, as well as saying farewell to our Year 2 pupils. This event is not to be missed! If there are any Year 2 pupils who have instrumental lessons and would like to perform, please email Ms Richards by Friday 13 June on err@exeterschool.org.uk.

Final day of term

On the last day of term, Wednesday 9 July, our drama club leader Ruth Lawrence will be running her usual end of year party for all children in the hall. We are also planning to have an outdoor disco in the afternoon, which should be lots of fun!

Please note that there will be no clubs in the final week of term (7-9 July) with the exception of drama club on Monday 7 July. However, Late Room will be running as normal until 5.30pm every evening.

Year 2 Leadership Roles

Congratulations to our Year 2 children who have been assigned the following leadership roles for this half term. Badges, lanyards and caps were presented to them today and the children have already made a great start in their roles. These roles have rotated every half term so that the children have experienced different responsibilities across the year. What a fantastic job they have all done and I’m sure they will continue to do!
