Junior Reflections Week 23 2024

Dear parents,

Reading

The week was started off with house assemblies, in which we ran a theme of ‘Reading’. It was really lovely to see the pupils share their favourite books with members of their house, which is a great way to start conversations with people who they may not have spoken with before. It also created a sense of house comradery, which certainly filled the air, and pupils even recommended some books for me to read…an Easter holiday job, and one that I certainly won’t mind doing!

Virgin Money

Virgin Money started with a bang on Tuesday and ran over three days. I am always in awe of the entrepreneurship that the pupils show and as always, I overspent and have quite a few IOUs; I never learn! This initiative is such a great way of getting pupils to collaborate with each other, learn the art of compromising (which as we know is always hard) and looking at how to make a profit; certainly, all skills for the future. I am very much looking forward to Dragons’ Den next Friday. Photos of some of the exciting transactions that have taken place can be found here.

Choral Society Concert

I had a musical treat on Wednesday with a truly wonderful performance from the Choral Society which took place in the cathedral. It was simply outstanding, and it was lovely to see so many pupils, parents, and staff singing and the symphony orchestra playing (I choose to watch rather than sing) but if you have not been before I can highly recommend coming along next year, or even joining the choir, as it really is a special experience. Photos of the event can be found here.

Sports fixtures

Over the past few weeks, we have been extremely busy hosting schools for netball, football and hockey tournaments. Last week our U11 boys won our very own football tournament, and the U11 girls took third place in the netball. This week our U8 and U9 girls played netball at Blundell’s whilst the boys also went to Blundells & Kings Taunton for the fixtures. We look forward to the annual House Cross Country competition, which takes place next Monday, and will involve every child in the junior school. I know that there will be pupils who are raring to go and others who are not so sure, but this event is always about perseverance and house spirit and most importantly, taking part.

Progress reports

The spring term cycle of parents’ evenings has now come to an end, and I hope you all managed to have constructive conversations with some of your child’s subject and form teachers. Progress will be reported on again next term, both in May (attainment and approach to learning grades) and in July (full written end of year reports).

I am hoping that the sun makes an appearance this week but whatever you are doing I hope that you have an enjoyable one.

Fourth Form spent the bank holiday weekend on their residential trip to Brenscombe, Dorset. They had plenty of fun out on the water, taking part in team building games and watching some beautiful sunsets with their friends ☀️
