Children playing cricket on hard playground

Pre-Prep Reflections 19 June 2026

Dear parents,

This week started with a school council meeting on Monday, in which we looked at the proposed lunch menu for the autumn term, and finished today with a timely visit from Jenny Spendlove, one of the cooks from Exeter School who prepares the pre-prep lunches. This was her first visit to Exeter Pre-Prep, giving her the chance to see how the lunch service is organised and chat to the children and staff about their views on the food. I think it’s delicious!

‘Ready for Anything’ drill

Yesterday morning, we held our first unannounced ‘Ready for Anything’ drill, which is similar to a lockdown procedure. Following on from last term’s soft walk-through, this gave us the opportunity to test the siren from inside the building and see whether the children and staff remembered the ‘invacuation’ procedure that we had rehearsed previously. Sure enough, they all left their classrooms calmly and quietly, and made their way into the hall where they were registered while the building was secured. The speed at which this all happened was highly impressive and I didn’t hear any talking! The children were reassured that it was a practice and that they had done brilliantly, before launching into a singing assembly with Mrs Dray.

UK School Dog of the Year

You may remember that Ruffles was recently ‘highly commended’ in the primary school category for UK School Dog of the Year, an award given out by the National School Dog Alliance (NSDA) in partnership with Swansea University. Entries had to show how each dog works with pupils, the difference they make to the children and school community, and how we prioritise canine welfare, training, enrichment and ongoing assessment. Yesterday afternoon, we were invited to join an online celebration by the NSDA, along with other highly commended primary, secondary and special school dogs! Isabella and Ted from Year 2 joined me and Ruffles on a Zoom meeting where we found out more about the work of the NSDA and this year’s overall winner, Sunshine, a rescue dog from Cyprus who supports children with social, emotional and mental health needs at Octavia House School in London.

Next week

We are looking forward to welcoming Dr Rainbow, the incoming Head of Exeter School, on his first visit to Exeter Pre-Prep next Wednesday morning. He will be having a tour of the school with me, saying hello to the children in assembly, and having coffee with the staff, ahead of taking up his new role in September. On Thursday, we have vision screening taking place for Reception children in the morning, followed by the Teddy Bears’ Picnic Lunch – don’t forget your teddies! We will round off the week with the whole school theatre trip to the Northcott Theatre to see The Gruffalo on Friday afternoon. If you have not yet done so, please complete the e-consent form here as a matter of urgency so that your child can join the trip.

Phew, I think I’m going to need to lie down before all that! Have a relaxing weekend.

Mr Daniel Ayling

Spotlight on Nursery

Our story of the week has been Walking Through the Jungle. The children thoroughly enjoyed discussing the different animals they might encounter on their jungle adventure, sharing their favourite animals and explaining why they like them. They then expressed their creativity by painting pictures of their chosen animals. In mathematics, we have been focusing on sequencing events, particularly the days of the week and months of the year. The children have been learning these through fun songs and are becoming increasingly confident in their understanding of time sequences. They have also been busy trying out different races for sports day and practising their songs for the summer showcase, which they are very excited to perform soon. There are lots of exciting events coming up as we approach the end of the term, and we look forward to sharing them with you!

End of Year Events

Teddy Bears’ Picnic

Back by popular demand! All children are invited to bring in a teddy/soft toy for a special picnic lunch in the school grounds on Thursday 25 June. Please ensure that the teddy fits into your child’s bag. Picnic lunches will be provided. Let’s hope for some nice weather!

Whole school theatre trip

We are looking forward to taking the children to see The Gruffalo at the Northcott Theatre in Exeter on the afternoon of Friday 26 June. We will be leaving after lunch and should be back at school by the end of the day. Please complete the e-consent form here as a matter of urgency if you have not already done so.

Transition afternoon

On Wednesday 1 July, all children will be moving up to their next classroom to spend the afternoon with their new teachers and teaching assistants. Any new children due to join the school in September are also invited to this event. At the end of the day, parents are welcome to come into the classrooms for an informal ‘meet the teacher’ session, where we will provide some further information about the year ahead. If you are unable to attend, please do not worry; we will ensure the information is sent home to you. Current Year 2 pupils who are going to Exeter School next year will be transported over to the junior school for the afternoon.

Sports Day

Our annual Sports Day will take place on the afternoon of Friday 3 July. This event is held outside on the grass from 1.30-3.30pm and all parents are welcome to attend. Fingers crossed for good weather!

UPDATE: While there will be no football club after school, STEM club will be running as normal for those who would like to stay on.

Parent drop-in

On Monday 6 July, we will be holding our final parent drop-in of the year from 3pm. All parents are welcome to come into your child’s classroom and look at a selection of their work from this year. You will then be able to take most of their books and folders home, so please bring a strong carrier bag that can hold heavy items. This is the same day as the Year 2 trip to National Marine Aquarium; the coach is due back between 3.00-3.30pm, but parents are still welcome to come in and look at your child’s work while you wait.

Summer showcase and prize giving

On Tuesday 7 July, all children will be taking part in our annual summer showcase in the hall, which parents are invited to attend. This starts at 2.30pm and will include performances from each class, soloists and whole school singing. We will also be presenting every child with a personalised certificate recognising their individual achievements this year, as well as saying farewell to our Year 2 pupils. This event is not to be missed!

Final day of term

On the last day of term, Wednesday 8 July, our drama club leader Ruth Lawrence will be running her usual end of year party for all children in the morning. In the afternoon, Mr Ben Stretton, who many of you will know as Finley and Sadie’s dad, has offered to run a storytelling session with Nursery and Reception, followed by a disco and games with Years 1 and 2! Families are then welcome to stay in the school grounds for a picnic and outdoor play from 3.30-4.30pm.

Please note that there will be no clubs in the final week of term (6-8 July) with the exception of drama club on Monday 6 July. However, Late Room will be running as normal until 5.30pm every evening.
