Pre-Prep Reflections 26 June 2026

Dear parents,

Well, it’s been rather hot, hasn’t it?! Fortunately, our old chapel building stays relatively cool and we had a special delivery of some new electric fans for all classrooms at the beginning of the week. Wednesday felt like the hottest day and we kept the children indoors after morning break, but yesterday we managed to get outside as there was more of a breeze. The children have been truly amazing at staying in the shade and remembering all our sun safety rules, and have carried on without complaining when we had to move some playtimes, PE lessons, clubs and our teddy bears’ picnic indoors. They have also enjoyed some extra treats, such as ice lollies, hydration stations, fruit salad making, and lots and lots of water play!

Dr Rainbow’s visit

On Wednesday morning, we were all excited to welcome the new Head of Exeter School, Adrian Rainbow, along to the pre-prep. This was his first chance to visit us since his appointment. He joined us in assembly and said hello to the children, then I gave him a tour of the school, and before he headed back to Exeter School he popped into the Nursery class to read The Gruffalo to them. Dr Rainbow takes up his new role in September and we look forward to many more visits next year.

Theatre trip

The highlight of the week was surely our whole school trip to the Northcott Theatre this afternoon to watch The Gruffalo. What a lovely way to end a busy week, and the children once again displayed impeccable behaviour and manners with everyone we met. The performance, now in its twenty-fifth year, was fantastic and we all very much enjoyed the air conditioning in the auditorium!

End of year reports

The red weather event has slightly derailed my progress with proof-reading the end of year reports, which were due to be published on the parent portal on Monday. I have therefore decided to delay this until Wednesday next week. Thank you for your patience.

Next week

We are looking forward to a less warm week but the forecast remains very summery, so please continue to apply sun scream and send in those sun hats and sunglasses. Next Wednesday is transition afternoon, so all children will be spending the whole afternoon ‘moving up’ to their new class with their new teachers and teaching assistants, together with new children who are joining the school in September. On Thursday, instead of Forest School, Mrs Smyth will be practising for Sports Day, ahead of the final event on Friday afternoon.

Have a great weekend and hope you all manage to keep cool.

Mr Daniel Ayling

Spotlight on Reception

This week, the children have been enjoying lots of exciting learning opportunities. With the temperatures rising, we have been learning about how to keep safe in the sun and how to look after ourselves during the hot weather. The children have enjoyed plenty of hydration breaks throughout the school day and had a few special ice lolly treats to help keep cool. The children also took part in their orthoptic vision screening yesterday and did very well. In literacy, our focus book this week has been Say Hello to the Animals. The children have loved learning about different animals and have been writing about their favourite animal, using their phonics knowledge and growing vocabulary to share facts and descriptions. In mathematics, the children have been exploring numerical patterns, including doubling, halving and sharing. We all thoroughly enjoyed our indoor Teddy Bears’ Picnic yesterday, which was a wonderful opportunity to spend time together. The children were also treated to a memorable trip to the theatre this afternoon to watch The Gruffalo. They loved the performance and enjoyed seeing one of their favourite stories brought to life on stage. It has been another busy and enjoyable week in Reception, and we are very proud of all the children’s enthusiasm and engagement in their learning.

End of Year Events

Transition afternoon

On Wednesday 1 July, all children will be moving up to their next classroom to spend the afternoon with their new teachers and teaching assistants. Any new children due to join the school in September are also invited to this event. At the end of the day, parents are welcome to come into the classrooms for an informal ‘meet the teacher’ session, where we will provide some further information about the year ahead. If you are unable to attend, please do not worry; we will ensure the information is sent home to you. Current Year 2 pupils who are going to Exeter School next year will be transported over to the junior school for the afternoon.

Sports Day

Our annual Sports Day will take place on the afternoon of Friday 3 July. This event is held outside on the grass from 1.30-3.30pm and all parents are welcome to attend. Fingers crossed for good weather!

UPDATE: While there will be no football club after school, STEM club will be running as normal for those who would like to stay on.

Parent drop-in

On Monday 6 July, we will be holding our final parent drop-in of the year from 3pm. All parents are welcome to come into your child’s classroom and look at a selection of their work from this year. You will then be able to take most of their books and folders home, so please bring a strong carrier bag that can hold heavy items. This is the same day as the Year 2 trip to National Marine Aquarium; the coach is due back between 3.00-3.30pm, but parents are still welcome to come in and look at your child’s work while you wait.

Summer showcase and prize giving

On Tuesday 7 July, all children will be taking part in our annual summer showcase in the hall, which parents are invited to attend. This starts at 2.30pm and will include performances from each class, soloists and whole school singing. We will also be presenting every child with a personalised certificate recognising their individual achievements this year, as well as saying farewell to our Year 2 pupils. This event is not to be missed!

Final day of term

On the last day of term, Wednesday 8 July, our drama club leader Ruth Lawrence will be running her usual end of year party for all children in the morning. In the afternoon, Mr Ben Stretton, who many of you will know as Finley and Sadie’s dad, has offered to run a storytelling session with Nursery and Reception, followed by a disco and games with Years 1 and 2! Families are then welcome to stay in the school grounds for a picnic and outdoor play from 3.30-4.30pm.

Please note that there will be no clubs in the final week of term (6-8 July) with the exception of drama club on Monday 6 July. However, Late Room will be running as normal until 5.30pm every evening.
