Exeter School sailors delivered outstanding performances at the South and Southwest Regional Junior Championships, securing podium finishes and showcasing resilience, skill and sportsmanship on the national stage.

Five Exeter School students travelled to the prestigious Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy last weekend to compete in the South and Southwest Regional Junior Championships, representing both Exe Sailing Club and Starcross Yacht Club.

With 165 sailors competing across a range of classes, the event provided a true test of skill and determination. Challenging conditions, including fog and light, unpredictable winds, made racing particularly demanding. However, Exeter School’s sailors embraced the challenge and delivered excellent results throughout the weekend.

Exeter School Sailors Rise to the Challenge

Representing their respective sailing clubs were:

  • Will W (M5) – RS Feva
  • Archie K (M5) – ILCA 4
  • Stefan A (L5) – RS Tera Pro
  • Rory D (4F) – Topper 5.3
  • Oliver S (3F) – RS Tera Sport

For Oliver, the Championships marked his first experience competing at this level, making his participation an especially memorable achievement.

Throughout the weekend, all five students demonstrated the qualities that are central to Exeter School’s sporting ethos: commitment, perseverance and a willingness to challenge themselves. They navigated difficult racing conditions with confidence while enjoying the camaraderie and atmosphere of the event both on and off the water.

Podium Success for Exeter School Sailors

A special congratulations goes to Stefan, who produced an exceptional performance in his final season sailing an RS Tera. Stefan steadily climbed the rankings across the weekend to secure two podium finishes, ending the Championships 3rd overall and 1st in the South West in the RS Tera Pro fleet.

Stefan’s achievement is a testament to his dedication and consistent hard work, and it provides a fitting highlight in his final season competing in the class.

Outstanding Result for Will

Will also enjoyed a superb weekend on the water, delivering a series of strong races to achieve an impressive 2nd overall finish in the highly competitive RS Feva fleet.

His result reflects both his sailing ability and determination in challenging conditions, earning him a well-deserved place on the podium.

Celebrating Sporting Excellence at Exeter School

The success of these five pupils highlights the strength of sailing at Exeter School and the breadth of opportunities available for pupils to pursue their passions beyond the classroom.

Competing at regional championship level requires dedication, resilience and teamwork, and all five sailors represented their clubs and Exeter School with distinction.

Congratulations to Will, Archie, Stefan, Rory and Oliver on their excellent achievements. We look forward to following their future success on the water.
