Two cadets from Exeter School recently took part in an exciting Bronze Wings course at RAF St Mawgan, gaining first-hand experience of life on an active military base while developing their aviation knowledge and practical flying skills.

The intensive course took place over one day and one night and gave cadets a unique insight into the standards, discipline and technical expertise required within military aviation.

Hands-On Aviation Training and Flight Simulators

During the course, cadets completed a range of classroom-based and practical activities focused on the science and mechanics of flight. Sessions explored the physics behind aircraft performance and introduced cadets to the correct procedures for carrying out a variety of manoeuvres, including stalling techniques.

One of the highlights of the experience was the opportunity to use highly advanced flight simulators. The cadets were able to put their learning into practice in a realistic flying environment, helping to deepen their understanding of aircraft control and aviation safety.

Learning Military Standards and Discipline

Alongside their aviation training, pupils also learned about the high standards expected within the RAF, including the importance of uniform, presentation and bearing. Experiencing daily life on an active military base gave the cadets a valuable appreciation of teamwork, discipline and responsibility.

The experience also allowed them to build confidence, resilience and leadership skills while representing the school in a prestigious national cadet programme.

Looking Ahead to the Silver Wings Course

Reflecting on the experience, the cadets described the course as both enjoyable and inspiring and strongly recommended it to other cadets interested in aviation and military training opportunities.

Having successfully completed the Bronze Wings course, both pupils are now looking forward to progressing onto the Silver Wings course next year.

Enrichment Opportunities at Exeter School

Experiences such as the Bronze Wings course form an important part of the wider enrichment opportunities available at Exeter School. Through cadet activities, leadership programmes and co-curricular learning, pupils are encouraged to develop confidence, ambition and a spirit of service beyond the classroom.
