On Tuesday 25 November, our Economics Society welcomed Stephen Ford, Project Director at Willmott Dixon Construction, for an engaging talk on the vital role quantity surveyors play in shaping public sector investment programmes.
Stephen shared a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at the bidding processes and intricate planning that underpin major construction projects. Students were captivated by his insights into the £750 million contract for the new NHS hospital in Derriford, Plymouth—a development set to transform healthcare provision in the region.
Beyond the technical aspects, Stephen highlighted the positive performance indicators that ensure projects deliver real community benefits, from local training programmes to community engagement initiatives. He also explored the diverse career pathways available in construction, including degree apprenticeships and graduate opportunities for aspiring professionals.
Larissa, Deputy President of the Economics Society, said: “It was a fascinating talk that confirmed my desire to pursue engineering further.”
A huge thank you to Stephen Ford and Willmott Dixon for inspiring our students and showcasing the exciting opportunities within the construction and infrastructure sector.
