Economics pupils explore London’s financial heart

Posted: 5th December 2025

On Monday 1 and Tuesday 2 December, a group of Upper Sixth pupils embarked on an enriching trip to London for an Economics Conference.

Day one began with a professional guided tour of the City of London, where pupils explored the evolution of the financial district—from the historic guilds to the foundations of the Stock Exchange and the Bank of England. Highlights included fascinating insights into the architecture of London’s newest skyscrapers.

In the evening, pupils were hosted by Jonathan Retter, Head of Global Banking at UBS London and an Exeter School alumnus [1990-1997]. Jonathan delivered an inspiring talk about his role as an investment banker, shared career pathways in global finance, and answered pupils’ questions about opportunities at UBS.

The following day, pupils attended a major economics conference in Westminster, where leading economists such as Vicky Pryce and Steven Davies gave illuminating talks on global economic challenges—from climate change strategies to the long-term impact of the recent budget.

Students found the experience invaluable. Monty commented: “A really useful insight into the future roles that we can play as professional economists.”

This trip offered a unique blend of history, modern finance, and forward-looking economic thinking—an unforgettable experience for our aspiring economists.
