A group of Upper Fifth (Year 11) chemistry pupils researched a topic of their choice and presented their work in the form of scientific posters at an academic conference. Staff and pupils came to view the posters in our Butterfield Hall while the group discussed their research on display. The standard of the entries was excellent and the topics were diverse from the medicinal properties of bee venom, chemiluminescence, the chemistry of modern warfare, water cremation and artificial sweeteners.
First place was awarded to Berenice for her poster on ‘Bee Venom “Nature’s Unexpected Cure”’ which combined a novel topic with a striking design and an exceptional level of chemistry, explained well in discussion.
Second place went to Alfie with ‘The Chemistry of Modern Warfare’. This poster covered a breadth of chemistry concepts from polymers and materials to explosives and poisons, all explained in clear and concise detail.
We had two pupils coming in third place. Anna’s poster on chemiluminescence contained incredibly high-level information about chemical reactions releasing light energy in nature and through synthetic routes, with glowsticks to help explain the concept. Anoushka entered ‘How do painkillers work?’ An exceptional level of knowledge came through in the well-designed poster and well-explained presentation.
All of the posters are displayed below, showing the range of topics which have stemmed from the initial brief. Names have been redacted which has affected the layout of some of the posters.
