Pre-Prep Reflections Week 12 December 2024

Dear parents,

Pre-Prep Disco

The highlight of this week was definitely our first ever school disco! Organised and run by the Family Society, the event was a huge success with almost every child in the school coming along to bust some moves and play party games. Thank you all for your support. Will from Sporty Stars did a brilliant job as DJ and MC, and the hall was transformed into a glow-in-the-dark extravaganza with UV lights and fluorescent face paints! Special thanks to Leigh Farmer and Sarah Saunders for all their hard work on what is sure to become an annual event.

Staff news

I am delighted to share the happy news that Mrs Wannell is expecting a baby. Many congratulations to Chloe and family. The children were told in assembly this morning and wanted to know what the baby would be called – I feel a naming competition coming on! Mrs Wannell is due in June and we will begin the recruitment process in the new year for an Early Years practitioner to cover her maternity leave.

Sickness

As usual at this time of year, there are a few bugs going around and we have had lots of children off sick this week. Please may we remind parents that any case of vomiting or diarrhoea requires children to stay at home for 48 hours after they are clear. This is to ensure that they are well enough to return to school, as well as to reduce the spread of infection to others. Fingers crossed that we can get everyone into school for the nativity performances next week!

Spring Term Clubs

Thanks to Ms AJ for organising the after school club bookings for next term. All requests have been met and you should have received an email from her confirming this. All clubs are due to start on the first day of the spring term, Monday 6 January 2025.

Next week

A reminder that Mrs Lawrence-Jones will be out of school all day on Monday to attend a training course. Mrs Smyth will be covering her teaching for the day. On Tuesday, we will be holding our first parent drop-in afternoon of the year; this is an informal event that we hold every term. Please head directly to your childโ€™s classroom at the earlier time of 3pm if you would like to view some of your childโ€™s work with them. The Christmas nativity performances will take place on Thursday and Friday from 2pm in the hall – please see the full details in the article below.

Storm Darragh is set to bring strong winds and heavy rain across the UK from tonight, so batten down the hatches and take care this weekend!

Mr Daniel Ayling

Spotlight on Reception

This week in Reception, the children have been continuing their rehearsals for the Christmas nativity. They are very excited to share their songs and dance with everyone next week. In our literacy lessons, we have been reading The Jolly Christmas Postman and thinking about the features of letters. The children have written their own Christmas cards to Mr Ayling. In phonics, they have been applying their knowledge, focusing on the ch, sh, th and ng digraphs when sorting real and nonsense words. It has been lovely to see how the children are progressing with their high frequency word recognition and writing and they have all shown huge improvements with their letter formation. In mathematics, the children have been learning about the properties of 2D shapes and exploring pattern through shapes. We are all very proud of the progress they have made in the second half of the term.

Christmas Festivities

A reminder that the arrangements for the final week-and-a-half of term are as follows:

Tuesday 10 December

The nativity dress rehearsal will be filmed and photographed in the morning. Please ensure costumes have been sent into school in a named bag by Friday 6 December.

Wednesday 11 Decemberย

All children and staff will enjoy a special Christmas lunch.

Thursday 12 and Friday 13 December

Nativity performances will take place in the hall from 2-3.30pm on both days. We will not be allocating seats but ask that parents kindly adhere to the policy of up to four seats per family. These may be used on either day. It would be helpful if individual parents and family members could choose one performance, rather than attending both, as this reduces the seats available for everyone.

Monday 16 December

Christmas Jumper Day: all children and staff may come into school wearing a Christmas jumper over their uniform. This is just for fun โ€“ no donations necessary. There will be no swimming for Year 2. Drama Club will now go ahead after school.

Tuesday 17 December

The Pantomime Play Company will be coming into school to perform โ€˜The National Elf Serviceโ€™ for the whole school in the afternoon.

Wednesday 18 December

There will be no swimming for Year 1. Mrs Ruth Lawrence, our Drama Club teacher, will be entertaining the children at their annual Christmas Party in the hall from 10-11am. All children are welcome to come to school in party clothes for the morning. Each child will also receive a Christmas present from Father Christmas!

Please note that we finish early at 12 noon for the end of term on Wednesday 18 December. There will be no lunch or Late Room, but the minibus will be operating a return journey to Exeter School.

With the exception of Drama Club on Monday, which will go ahead, there are no after school clubs running in the final week of term (16-18 December). Late Room will be open until 5.30pm on Monday 16 and Tuesday 17 December for those who need after school care.

There will be a charge of ยฃ11.00 per child towards the cost of the pantomime, Christmas party and present, which will be added to your next invoice. If your child is in Nursery and you would like them to attend extra sessions in the run up to Christmas, please contact Ms AJ to see if we have spaces available: preprep@exeterschool.org.uk.
