Art scholarship assessment day

Posted: 3rd December 2024

Yesterday, fifteen pupils from five different schools, ranging in age from 10 to 16, participated in a day of creativity with Mrs Brewer during the Scholarship assessment in the art studios. She was highly impressed by their ability to articulate their ideas about art history and collaborate effectively as a team to produce impressive sculptures.

The artwork created on the day demonstrated exemplary skill and the eagerly anticipated the review of these assessments with Mrs Simpson will select our new cohort of scholars to represent Exeter School.

Chloe W in Upper Fifth, reflects on her experience of the day:

After a short icebreaker with hot chocolate and biscuits, we were split into year groups and given three random words. With only the materials provided, we collaborated to create sculptures that were influenced by these abstract words. From emotional robots, to hanging structures, to using our structures to spread awareness on the larger problems of life, everyone produced a unique outcome.

The second half of the session focused on individual capability. We used our sculptures as either a reference or influence to produce our own interpretation of the piece. It was completely free; abstraction, traditional painting, blowing ink, photography, poetry, animation, creating characters… The possibilities were endless.

Finally, there was a short interview with Mrs. Brewer to showcase our chosen personal work from our portfolio to show the art we produce outside of school.

This experience allowed me to fully express my passion for art, and I enjoyed it thoroughly!
