Senior Library Newsletter

Senior school library news – November 2024

“Super Thursday” is what the book industry calls the day in October when all the books designed to be released in time for Christmas are published. This year, nearly 1,900 books were published in the UK on Super Thursday. How on earth are you supposed to wade your way through all that? With publisher’s marketing budgets increasingly focused on celebrity authors and high profile releases, it’s not an easy task. Well, that’s where this newsletter should help. We’ve picked out just a few from this year’s avalanche of literature, and have also looked back over the last few years for hidden gems that you might have missed, or that didn’t get the publicity they deserved, but have been a hit with our pupils. Once the dust settles, really great writing does still shine through.

Visiting Authors 2024-25

This year we’re delighted to be hosting two award-winning authors. Wren James is visiting Fourth Form and Lower Fifth on 18 November and Fleur Hitchcock will speak to Third Form on 12 March, so you might consider one of their books when thinking of Christmas presents. Wren (published as Lauren James) writes compelling science fiction novels informed by real science (they’ve studied Chemistry and Physics at master’s level). Fleur writes mystery novels full of adventure, tension and imagination.

Murder Mystery Sleepover

Finally, if you’re a fan of Fleur Hitchcock, look out for news coming soon about a Third Form Murder Mystery Sleepover event coming up in the Spring term. Here’s a sneak preview…

The pupils of Exechester School (any similarities to Exeter School entirely coincidental) are gathering in the Butterworth Hall for a special evening talk by celebrity children’s author and Exechester alumna Cate Darling. Little do they know that they’re about to become key players in a murder investigation in which they will peek beneath the glossy surface of their beloved school and glimpse the intrigue, rivalry, jealousy and outright corruption that lies beneath. With codes to crack, computers to hack, locked rooms to escape and red herrings to avoid, this is set to be a night like no other!
