Pre-Prep Reflections Week 22 March 2025

Dear parents,

Assemblies

We have enjoyed celebrating Book Week with lots of reading-themed activities and assemblies. Throughout the week, the teachers have visited different classes to share some of their favourite stories and all staff took part in a ‘guess who’s behind the book’ photo competition for the children. Today, Ms Richards talked to the children about International Women’s Day and shared this video about challenging gender stereotypes.

World Book Day

Yesterday, we celebrated World Book Day with an exciting off-timetable day. The children and staff all looked brilliant in their costumes, which they were able to show off during a parade in the hall. I had much fun, dressed as Burglar Bill, pinching items left lying around the school for my swag bag! The children moved around the school to take part in themed workshops, each related to a different book. It was a fun and memorable day and a chance to celebrate our love of books and reading. All the children were also given a World Book Day token to exchange for a free book or use to get £1 off a book of their choice.

Pancake Races

On Tuesday, we all headed out to the tennis court for our annual pancake races. It was a lovely sunny morning, with each class taking turns to race in their houses, tossing their pancakes as they went! They were cheered on by their fellow house members and everyone received a sticker for taking part with such enthusiasm and team spirit.

School visits

This morning, I visited The Maynard School for a tour and a meeting with the heads of pre-prep and junior school. I was made to feel very welcome and it was lovely to see one of our former pupils, as well as sisters of current pupils. I especially enjoyed meeting their school dogs! I am gradually working my way around local schools – next up is Trinity School in Teignmouth in two weeks’ time.

Next week

I have been busy proof-reading and making the final edits to each child’s spring reviews and we are aiming to get these out to parents on Monday. I will be away for the rest of next week on an ISI inspection in Berkshire, followed by the IAPS pre-prep heads conference on Friday in Leicester. Ms Richards will be leading the school in my absence. Next Friday is Red Nose Day, which as usual is a non-uniform day for all children. The suggested donation for this is £1-2.

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend.

Mr Daniel Ayling

Spotlight on Reception

It has been a very busy week in Reception class. In literacy, our focus text has been Farmer Duck and the children have been thinking about the different perspectives of the characters and writing down their ideas, with a particular focus on using finger spaces between words. The children have also been focusing on editing their work to make improvements, thinking carefully about letter formation and full stops. In mathematics, we have been thinking about the composition of the numbers 9 and 10, and ways to represent these numbers on dominoes whilst using the language of ‘fewer than’ and ‘more than’. The children loved participating in the pancake races on Tuesday in the sunshine. We also saw some fantastic costumes for World Book Day and the children immersed themselves into all our lovely workshops. Our topic this half term is ‘On the Farm’ and we have been looking at how wheat is grown and how bread is made. We have been working on our independence skills and this week the children were taught how to make toast, spread the butter and cut it safely. The children have also been very busy creating some lovely ‘snapdragon plant’ artwork for our new classroom display. We are enjoying the spring weather and are looking forward to the rest of the term.

Staff update

TA recruitment

This afternoon, Mrs Van, Ms Richards and I have been holding interviews for a new teaching assistant to work initially in Year 2 alongside Mrs Titchin. Thank you to those Year 1 and Year 2 children who took part in a group activity with the candidates. I look forward to updating you on the outcome of these as soon as possible.

More baby news!

I am delighted to announce that Mrs Lawrence-Jones is expecting a baby in September. Many congratulations to her. She shared this exciting news with the children this afternoon. We will be advertising for a teacher to cover her maternity leave shortly.

Upcoming events

Red Nose Day

Next Friday is Red Nose Day, which will be a non-uniform day for all children and staff. The suggested donation is £1-2 for the charity Comic Relief. We will not be selling red noses in school, but children are welcome to bring them in to wear on the day. They are being sold on the Comic Relief website and on Amazon.

Parents’ Evening

This term’s parent-teacher meetings are taking place on Wednesday 19 March. AJ has emailed all parents with a link to the booking form. Please let us know if you did not receive this.

Parent Drop-in

All parents are welcome to drop in to classrooms at the slightly earlier time of 3pm on Wednesday 26 March. This is an informal opportunity, held every term, to look at some of your child’s work with them. There is no need to book.

Easter Assembly

On the final day of term, Thursday 3 April, we will be running an Easter theme day for the children all day, and we warmly invite parents to join us for a special Easter assembly at 3pm in the hall, where the children will be sharing what they have been doing and singing some songs. Again, there is no need to book for this.
