Exeter School’s Assembly Hall was transformed into the city’s coolest jazz venue on Tuesday evening as the much-loved annual Jazz Supper returned. For one night only, ‘Tamblyns’ welcomed families, friends and music lovers for an evening of exceptional live performances, delicious food and a wonderful celebration of student talent.
Bathed in colourful lighting and supported by a professional sound system expertly installed by Miss Smith, Stan M and the school’s technical team, the Assembly Hall provided the perfect setting for an unforgettable evening of live jazz.
The audience enjoyed performances from Jazz Bands 1 and 2, the Sax Ensemble, Swunk, Swunkette and a special one-night-only appearance from the aptly named duo, Shrunk.
The varied programme showcased an exciting mix of swing, funk, jazz standards and big band classics. Across every ensemble, pupils impressed with rhythmically confident performances, polished musicianship and creative improvisation. Their enthusiasm was infectious, creating a relaxed atmosphere that had performers and audience members alike enjoying every moment.
A celebration of music and community
As well as directing both Swunk and Swunkette, Mr Bowen hosted the evening with warmth and humour, guiding guests through the programme and celebrating the hard work of every performer.
During the interval, guests enjoyed a delicious jacket potato supper with a choice of toppings, freshly prepared by Mr Swan and the Exeter School catering team. The shared meal added to the welcoming atmosphere, making the Jazz Supper as much a community event as a musical showcase.
Ending on a high
The evening drew to a close shortly after 9pm, bringing another successful Jazz Supper to an end. For several of the musicians, however, the music was far from over. Many were due to meet again just an hour later before setting off on tour with the Devon Youth Jazz Orchestra—a fitting next step after such an accomplished performance at Exeter School.
The annual Jazz Supper continues to be a highlight of the school’s musical calendar, celebrating not only outstanding musical achievement but also the friendships, confidence and enjoyment that come from performing together.
