Hands-on Roman history brings learning to life

Form One pupils travelled back in time as they enjoyed an exciting and immersive Roman History Day, packed with creative activities, practical learning and plenty of opportunities to explore one of history’s most fascinating civilisations.

Throughout the day, pupils discovered what life was like in Ancient Rome through a series of engaging, hands-on experiences. They marched together as part of a Roman army, learning about the discipline, teamwork and organisation that helped the Romans build one of the greatest empires in history. Stepping into the sandals of a Roman soldier gave pupils a memorable insight into the lives of those who lived nearly 2,000 years ago.

Creativity was at the heart of the day. Pupils carefully designed and crafted their own miniature Roman mosaics, taking inspiration from the intricate artwork that decorated Roman homes and public buildings. They also created detailed peg doll Roman soldiers, each with its own unique design and personality. Many pupils then brought their characters to life by producing stop-motion animations, combining historical knowledge with digital storytelling and developing their creative and technological skills along the way.

The adventure didn’t end there. Several pupils chose to extend their learning independently by exploring Roman baths in Minecraft. Using the popular platform, they recreated and investigated these remarkable structures, demonstrating curiosity, imagination and an enthusiasm for bringing history into the digital world.

Roman myths and legends also captured pupils’ imaginations, introducing them to the colourful stories that shaped Roman culture and inspired generations. These tales sparked thoughtful discussions and encouraged pupils to reflect on the beliefs and traditions of the ancient world.

The day was a wonderful celebration of curiosity, creativity and collaborative learning, allowing pupils to deepen their understanding of Roman history while developing confidence, teamwork and problem-solving skills in a fun and engaging environment.

To top it all off, the glorious sunshine provided the perfect backdrop for the day’s activities, with the weather feeling remarkably similar to a warm day in Rome itself.

A huge thank you to everyone who helped make the day such a memorable success. Form One embraced every challenge with enthusiasm and thoroughly enjoyed their journey into the world of Ancient Rome.
