eNewsletter – summer term

The school has now well and truly come alive with sport being played on a less soggy field and happy shenanigans from the sixth formers who are entering their final months at the school. It’s also exam season here, so many pupils are busy revising and the signs are out requesting quiet around certain areas of the school site.

Our Upper Sixth will shortly head into their last half term as Exeter School pupils – a bittersweet time. We are excited for them to take their next steps, of course, but will miss seeing their faces each day. One such pupil that will be greatly missed is Lily, our archives prefect. Lily has done a stellar job helping our archivists, Kevin White (1953-1961) and Richard Fryer (staff, 1974-), to delve into the archives. Her enthusiasm is infectious and she’s encouraged fellow pupils to take an interest – we’ve had a quite a few visitors to the Exonian Centre! You can read more about Lily and her love for the school’s history in the next edition of The 1633.

It’s been a pleasure to welcome a number of OEs and friends back to the school recently. As ever, we are very grateful for the support of our donors and it was lovely to gather many of them together to watch some cricket and enjoy lunch in April. It was also a huge privilege to see OEs who were pupils here in the 1950s come together in the Butterfield hall to enjoy an afternoon of reminiscing. There are plenty of other opportunities to attend alumni events – you can find details of these below. I hope many of you will be able to join us. If you have any questions, please do get in touch with my colleague Claire Priday, our events officer, at clp@exeterschool.org.uk.

It feels like we’re steadily marching towards the end of the summer term and towards a new era with the appointment of Dr Adrian Rainbow, our new Head, in September. You may have already had a chance to hear from Dr Adrian, but if you are keen to meet him then join us at school on 19 September… more can be found on this below. Of course, there will be lots more opportunities to meet our new Head over the coming year.

Thank you to those who were called during our most recent telephone campaign. Our callers thoroughly enjoyed hearing about your school days and we send our sincerest thanks for your time and kind donations to the bursary fund – your support is invaluable.

Founders’ Day – 25 March 2026

The junior and senior school gathered at Exeter Cathedral to once again celebrate Founders’ Day.

Witnessing nearly a thousand pupils come together at Exeter Cathedral to celebrate our history is a powerful reminder of the forward-thinking and generous individuals who contributed to the school’s foundation, and we are certain that many of our alumni will have fond memories of making their own way to the Cathedral to mark and celebrate a history that spans more than three centuries.

David Scott (1957-1968)

“When I was at school, the Direct Grant system meant that 25% of places were offered to children who achieved the required marks in the 11-plus exams. These places were state-funded, enabling academically able pupils to access a top-quality education who otherwise would not have been able to attend. It helped break down social barriers, with pupils from different backgrounds forming lasting friendships and realising that character mattered more than circumstance. I came to Exeter School after passing my 11-plus, and it was the ideal environment for me.”
Although the Direct Grant system no longer exists, our commitment remains the same – to ensure that an excellent education is accessible to talented young people regardless of financial background.
If you would like to help change a child’s future by supporting the bursary fund, please contact Alice Holohan, Director of Development and Alumni Relations – asah@exeterschool.org.uk. Make a gift and change a life. Thank you.

Oh, the places we go!

Exeter School has long been known for its rich co-curricular programme and, when alumni reflect on their time here, it is often the school trips that stand out most vividly. Still to come this term are a canoeing trip in the Wye Valley, a cricket tour in Worcester, an art trip to London, sea kayaking in South Cornwall and a music tour to Harz, Germany – all of which will no doubt keep the teachers busy!

We would be thrilled to hear your memories of where you went outside the classroom… from Morwellham Quay to Machu Picchu, please leave no stone unturned, and tell us which trip lingers in your memory.

Young Entrepreneurs

Exeter School recently hosted the final of its Young Entrepreneurs competition in the Andrews Hall, where pupils presented a range of innovative business ideas to an audience of parents, staff and supporters. Judging the competition were Richard Marsh, representing Exeter Chamber of Commerce, and Emily Peters (2008-2015) of The Udder Stuff, who brought valuable industry insight to the event. Through thoughtful questions and feedback, they encouraged pupils to demonstrate their understanding of business strategy, sustainability and customer engagement, making the evening a rewarding learning experience for all involved.

SAVE THE DATE | Exeter School fete | Saturday 19 September

The Exeter School fete returns later this year, bringing a full day of stalls, food outlets and games for all to enjoy. Visitors will also have the opportunity to meet our new Head, Dr Adrian Rainbow. Further details to be shared soon.

Ten Tors 2026

Exeter School pupils once again took on the legendary Ten Tors Challenge on Dartmoor, with teams completing demanding 35-, 45- and 55-mile routes across rugged terrain. Reflecting on the event, Head of Ten Tors and maths teacher, Ben Hall, praised the pupils’ resilience, teamwork and determination throughout months of training and the challenge weekend itself, describing Ten Tors as a uniquely rewarding experience and a proud Exeter School tradition.

In next year’s edition of The 1633 we would love to write about your memories of this special event, and would be doubly thrilled if you have any photos you could dig out! Please get in touch with Ali – amcg@exeterschool.org.uk to share your stories.

Read all about it

We are delighted that we’ll soon be sending the latest edition of The 1633 to your inboxes and through your letterboxes.

Do we have your correct address for sending the magazine to?

The magazine will feature a familiar selection of articles… ‘A day in the life of’ where we hear from a current teacher and a previous pupil, ‘Then and now’ sharing the stories of previous teachers, a crossword to get your brain around and plenty of ‘Exonian news’. In this edition we also shine a spotlight on alumni making waves in the media industry, both behind and in front of the camera. If being out on the water is more your thing, former physics teacher Rex Frost (staff, 1979-2007) has provided a wonderful article about three highly successful alumni from the world of sailing.

Boston brilliance

James Saddler (1994-2005), a keen runner and long-standing participant in the annual OE cross-country race – which he won last year – recently got in touch to share news of his experience running the Boston Marathon on 20 April 2026. Taking on the famous point-to-point course from Hopkinton to Boston, including the challenging ‘Heartbreak Hill’, James completed the marathon in an impressive time of 2:56:24. He described the cool race-day conditions as ideal and said he was delighted with his result.

Next on James’ marathon calendar is the Cologne Marathon in October, where he hopes to achieve a ‘good for age’ qualifying time for the London Marathon. Before then, however, he is already looking forward to returning for the annual Old Exonians cross-country race, adding, “let battle commence.”

Malcolm Brook (1949-1954) sadly lost his younger brother, Trevor (1957-1961), at the beginning of this year. While looking back through records of Trevor’s time at Exeter School in our online archives, we came across this evocative and beautifully written poem, published in the Easter Term 1958 edition of The Exonian.

You will have the opportunity to read more about Trevor’s life, along with other alumni whom we are honoured to remember, in the next edition of The 1633.

We would love to hear from our female alumni who are currently or have been involved in our country’s security i.e. military, police, intelligence, cyber security. We will be holding an information event for pupils and parents in the autumn and would value your presence! Please email careers@exeterschool.org.uk

OE v Exeter School kick about

Harrison Thorne (2003-2010) regaled us with this fantastic account of what went down on the pitch between the OE XI and Exeter School 1st XI, “A blustery and chilly Victoria Park Road welcomed the OEs back for the annual fixture against the 1st XI. Greeted at the gates by the gaffer, Giles Ashman, fresh after picking up the spring league Isca Trophy. He soon knew that his victorious team were in for a tough afternoon, with an experienced 16 man strong squad assembled to do battle for the bragging rights.

“The opening stages saw the tussle for possession and control of the game bounce around between the sides, similar to the first touch of some rusty old boys. However, it was the OEs who began to take control of the game, playing with a strong wind at their back, Luke Stitson (2006-2013) opened the scoring with a 30 yard free kick, filled with venom that swerved on said wind and was too much for the keeper to handle.

“Rob Stoyle (2012-2019) then doubled the advantage just before the half time whistle with a bullet header following a whipped, in swinging corner from Stitson. The second half saw a share of the ball but with a few chances at each end. Although, Graeme Martin (1997-2004) put the result out of any doubt with 25 minutes to spare, pouncing on a tackle from Freddie Crowley (2008-2014), coolly lobbing the keeper from 25 yards. Before then getting his brace with a cushioned header into the near corner after a precise cross to the back stick from Alex Helliar (1999-2010) on the right, 0-4.

“The School pulled one back in injury time, capitalising on a goalkeeper clearance where Charlie Pullen (2010-2020), who had replaced the reliable Will Furniss (2009-2020) for the last 10, was trying to navigate a back pass on the bouncy, firm surface. Seeing the ball calmly finished over his head from 35 yards to just take the edge off the perfect performance. Nevertheless, another great afternoon and looking forward to next year’s encounter already.”

In-person work experience

We are looking for alumni based in the South West who may be able to offer in-person work experience placements to current Exeter School pupils in law, medicine or chemical engineering. Providing even a few days of insight into your profession can make a hugely valuable difference to a young person considering their future career path. If you may be able to help, we would be delighted to hear from you.

Return of the 50s

We were delighted to welcome back alumni who attended Exeter School during the 1950s. A wonderful afternoon was spent catching up with former pupils in the Butterfield Hall, where our archivist, Kevin White (1953-1961), was on hand to greet old friends and guide alumni through photographs and memorabilia sourced from the archive.

It is always special to welcome alumni back to the school and have the opportunity to reflect on their time here, while also sharing how the values that shaped their experience remain at the heart of the school today. Click below to view fantastic photos from the event.

Sharing your stories and tracking down alumni

In the past, the Old Exonian magazine featured short updates from alumni about where life had taken them since their school days. We would love to continue this format in The 1633, but we need your help! So whether it’s a big achievement or a small milestone, please share your news with us. Send your updates to Communications and Alumni Officer, Ali McGeown.

The Alumni and Development office helps OEs stay connected, and we’re often happy to assist in tracking down members of our alumni community. If there’s a former classmate or teacher you’d like to contact, please use the button below.

We hope to see our alumni at the Devon County Show this year! 😄👩‍🌾🥕🚜🐮🐴🌦️🥂💚
We were touched to learn that alumna Ellie Dawson (2005-2013) will be running the London Marathon in memory of her dad, Richard Dawson (staff, 1991-2014).

Many of you may remember Mr Dawson from your time at the school, when he was our Head of Modern Languages, described by his colleagues as “one of the nicest, calmest and wisest men you could possibly meet”.

Ellie will be raising money for Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice, who looked after him in his final weeks. You can find out more about Ellie’s fundraising efforts via the link in our bio.

We wish Ellie the best of luck and would love to hear from other alumni who are taking part in this year’s London Marathon. Please do comment or send us a message so that we can celebrate your journey.

A huge congratulations to alumnus Ian Williams (1990-1995), who recently won his ninth world title at the Match Racing World Championship in Shenzhen, China.

The @worldmatchracingtour is one of sailing’s most prestigious series, bringing together the world’s leading sailors to compete head-to-head in identical boats.

Following the historic victory, Ian heaped praise on his incredible team of Gerard Mitchell, Richard Sydenham and Jon Gundersen, saying “I love sailing with these guys, and of course it’s that much sweeter when we get to hoist the trophy. It’s an incredible feeling to win again”

You can read more about Ian and his team’s remarkable achievement through the article (link in bio) on the @worldsailingofficial website.

Thank you to former physics teacher and Head of CCF Rex Frost (staff, 1979-2007) for sharing this fantastic news.
