Congratulations to Toby and Jacob, Lower Sixth pupils, who have secured a place in the national final of the Institute of Economic Affairs’ annual Budget Competition. The final will take place in London on 13 April, following their success at the regional finals held at the University of Buckingham’s Vinson Centre for Economic Understanding on 10 March.
The competition attracted over 300 applicants from 173 schools, making their achievement in reaching the final eight teams particularly impressive. As part of the challenge, students were required to propose alternative policies that the Chancellor could adopt in the national budget.
Toby and Jacob focused on two key areas:
- Introducing additional land taxes to stimulate economic growth
- Reforming the benefits system to encourage a return to work in the post‑pandemic economy
Their submission was the result of three months of meticulous research and economic modelling, during which they explored the complexities of tax reform and labour market incentives. Judges praised the pair for their insightful analysis, strong grasp of economic detail, and the clarity with which they presented their proposals.
We wish Toby and Jacob the very best as they prepare for the final in London.
