Senior Reflections Week 33 June 2025

Dear parents,

Last weekend was a very busy one; on Saturday evening we hosted more than 100 alumni here for the anniversary dinner. It is always a great pleasure to talk to former pupils and staff about their experiences and memories from Exeter School and I very much enjoyed engaging with past pupils, as I always do, over both drinks and dinner. I was lucky to be seated with our 1965 leavers (six of these gentlemen came along) and their recollections of school life in the sixties were both fascinating and very entertaining. They have gone on to have varied, rewarding and interesting lives, but what is so remarkable is that the connections that they made at school remain true and firm today. I hope that will be the case for your own children when they leave us, and also that they leave some of their spirit here at school, just as these alumni have.

Fete on Saturday – pretty damp but full of Exonian spirit!

During the day we had a slightly soggy school summer fete, but nonetheless there were plenty of people here and the atmosphere was wonderful – with games and sideshows, stalls and refreshments to entertain and keep everyone busy and well fed. Enormous thanks to the operations team for all their hard work in making the logistics come together (including some very necessary last minute shelters!) and to all those who ran stalls and helped us to raise money for the school’s charities. Special thanks to the family society committee, who had worked tirelessly on signing up stalls, and making sure that it all ran brilliantly on the day. It was wonderful to see so many of your children here, some of them running stalls on their own initiative; they were super impressive!

Canoe trip to River Wye

Last weekend’s paddling trip on the River Wye was hugely enjoyable for the group of 30 Lower Fifth pupils involved. My apologies for not acknowledging the contributions by Mr Jamie Brough who also accompanied the expedition. This was a great trip, by all accounts, and I think that, despite being on the water, the group stayed drier than we did at the fete on Saturday afternoon!

School uniform – second hand shop

We are aware that some parents are concerned about the availability of current school uniform through the second hand shop. We have listened to the concerns and decided to keep the second hand shop going for the moment. This will, we hope, ensure that current families can source second hand goods as they have done in the past. We continue to ask you to support us with ensuring that your children comply with the school uniform guidelines, as outlined in last week’s newsletter. New school uniform will be available to purchase very soon and we hope that many of you will decide to buy the new stock which is much better quality and will help pupils to look very smart.

HMC – the Heads Conference.

We are a member of HMC, an association of heads of independent schools like Exeter School. With association membership comes many benefits, not least the collegiality of being part of a group of like minded professionals and the opportunity to share ideas and good practice. Today, we welcome the SW group of heads for our final meeting of the year and a workshop from Claire Harvey, Paralympian and EDI and culture advocate. Claire spent the morning working with your children, so please do ask them about their day. She has a fascinating story to tell about her journey both before and after the accident that put her into a wheelchair and her message is always inspirational, focusing on kindness and collaboration as well as grit and resilience.

After last weekend’s fixtures were cancelled due to the weather, I am hopeful of some sunshine tomorrow and wish you all a great weekend.

Instrumental lessons

We are excited to announce that harpist Katie McClaughry is joining the visiting music teacher team at Exeter School. Katie has extensive experience as a teacher and performer based in the South West, and by means of introduction, played the harp to all our juniors and a number of the senior pupils in sessions last half term.  She says of her instrument: “Folk, classical, jazz and rock – the harp can do anything. It comes in a range of shapes and sizes, with rental options available.”

To apply for lessons on the harp, or any of the many other instruments that can be learned from our visiting music teachers, parents should complete and submit the music/ instrumental lessons form on My School Portal.

Lower school play

Two lower school (3rd and 4th form) casts are tackling two of Shakespeare’s greatest tragedies – Macbeth and Romeo and Juliet. With over 50 pupils involved on stage and backstage, this is a real team effort. The scripts are abridged versions that have been edited by the drama department to create two pieces of approximately 40 minutes each, using the original text. Rehearsed over just five days, these will be two high energy, rip roaring productions. There will be weird witches emerging out of thin air, angry adolescents skateboarding across stage, bloody battles and tender kisses…..these are two shows you won’t want to miss.

The performances take place on Monday 23 and Tuesday 24 June 2025 at 7.30pm in the school main hall.

Ticket Prices are: Adult £10 / Child £8

Alumni testimonials

Adam (2021-2023), bursary award holder

“My journey to Exeter School started in 2021. I left state school with average grades and was very fortunate to join the Sixth Form at Exeter School thanks to the bursary programme.

The range of opportunities available to me was absolutely incredible: I became a senior prefect, I ran the History Society, joined the MedSoc, set up a University Challenge club, and took up badminton. I was also able to go abroad for the first time, to Ireland with my history class. It was incredible to see the site of the 1916  Easter Rising in person instead of a textbook – and I finally have a passport!

These were opportunities previously unavailable to me, and I absolutely loved taking part in them. Despite taking humanities-based A-Levels, with help from the MedSoc and extensive 1-to-1 career support, I ended up studying Medicine at the University of Manchester! I hope to one day specialise in anaesthesiology or geriatrics.

I am also the first in my family to attend university and my mum, who is a cleaner at my primary school, loves to brag to my former teachers about how far I’ve come. It makes me very proud to say that I went to Exeter School.

I owe where I am now, and where I will be in the future, to my experience at Exeter School, and I would like to personally thank all the donors that have made my dream possible via the bursary scheme.”

Looking forward to welcoming @hamishpercy to Exeter School tomorrow. Hamish will be working with our sports scholars delivering some media training and discussing public speaking, interview skills and social media sports profiles.

After studying History at the University of Nottingham and completing a Masters in Sports Journalism at St. Mary’s University, Twickenham, Hamish went on to start his career freelancing with BT Sport Rugby before moving to Premier League Productions for 4 years. He then had a brief stint freelance presenting in the world of sport.

Hamish subsequently moved to SPORTbible, part of the LADbible Group, to launch their YouTube channel in September 2024 and has grown the channel to have over 71M views, securing major sponsorships with brands like Domino’s along the way. He has been lucky enough to interview stars like Luke Littler (Darts), Jasprit Bumrah (Cricket), Carlos Alcaraz (Tennis), Harry Kane (Football), Maro Itoje (Rugby), Naomi Osaka (Tennis) and more who all feature on the channel.
