Exeter School is delighted to announce the appointment of Dr Adrian Rainbow as the next Head of Exeter School, starting in September 2026.

Dr Rainbow brings a wealth of experience and academic rigour to the role. He holds a PhD in English, an MA in English, and a PGCE in English and Drama from the University of Exeter; an MA in Educational Leadership and Management from the University of Bath; and a BA in English and Philosophy from the University of British Columbia.

With a proven track record of impact across the education sector, Dr Rainbow combines practical leadership experience with a clear vision for educational excellence. He is currently Head of London Park School Mayfair (previously Eaton Square Senior School) and prior to that was Headmaster at Hampton Court House School, all part of the Dukes Education group. Prior to these roles, he served as Deputy Head at Sevenoaks School.

Originally from Canada, Dr Rainbow played American football at a competitive level before he embarked on his career in education and remains passionate about sport and physical activity. In his spare time, he enjoys running, cooking, reading widely, and exploring the arts.

Dr Rainbow will work closely with Mr Graham Bone, who will serve as Acting Head for the 2025–26 academic year, to ensure a smooth and constructive handover process. This collaborative transition will provide stability and a strong platform for the school’s continued success.

Chair of Governors at Exeter School, Ms Gillian Hodgetts, said: “We are delighted to have recruited someone of Dr Rainbow’s calibre to lead Exeter School. As we look ahead to the school’s 400-year anniversary in 2033, this appointment marks the start of a new era. We are confident that Dr Rainbow will build on our proud traditions and continue to strengthen our commitment to character education, ensuring our pupils grow into well-rounded young people who act with integrity, respect and kindness. We look forward to welcoming Dr Rainbow and his family to Exeter School.”

Dr Rainbow commented: “It is a great honour to have been appointed the next Head of Exeter School. From my first encounters, I have been struck by the warmth and shared sense of purpose across the community. Exeter School’s commitment to character education—something I hold dear—truly sets it apart. I look forward to building on this proud tradition with pupils, staff, families, governors and alumni. Having studied and lived in Exeter for many years, I know what a special place it is, and my family and I are thrilled to be returning to the Southwest, we have a sense of returning home.”
