Making time for reading

This year, we’ve been lucky enough to have a ‘book chat’ with every pupil in Third and Fourth form about books and reading. It’s always wonderful to have conversations around books – and we’d definitely recommend doing that at home – but these chats have also revealed a lot about our pupils’ reading habits and we’d love to share some of what they told us.

Some of our pupils undoubtedly enjoy reading more than others, but what came up again and again is that even the keenest readers have to actively make time for reading or end up reading much less. This is why we dedicate some lesson time in Third and Fourth Form to free-choice reading. At home it can be harder to ring-fence time like this, especially with so much competing for our attention, so we asked pupils how they did it in their families.

So, here are some of the things Exeter School families are doing to make time for reading:

Reading before bed

This was the most common time that pupils successfully make time to read. How about trying twenty minutes or so before lights out? Pupils also said they find it calming and relaxing to read before sleep which is a happy bonus.

No devices upstairs

Lots of pupils mentioned that they were distracted by phones and iPads charging in their bedroom. Some families find only charging downstairs helps.

Family reading time

Sounds quite utopian, but some families make this work. Half an hour or so either as soon as everyone is home from work or after dinner when everyone sits and reads their own books together.

Reading in the car

Some pupils don’t get travel sick when reading in the car. What a great superpower! If you have it, use it!

Audiobooks in the car/bus

More realistic. How long is your journey into school? Some families listen to an audiobook together on the journey. (Did you know Devon public libraries lend e-audiobooks? Click here to find out more)

Talk about books!

So many pupils were reading books that their parents or siblings had recommended and spoke warmly about bookish conversations at home. It can also open up some wonderful conversations that go beyond the pages of books.

If your family has any other tips or can share your experience of making time for reading, please do get in touch!

Choosing books

How to choose a book by Tim Halpin

What kind of reader are you?

Knowing what kind of reader you are can help you choose a book you will enjoy. Try to fun quiz to explore your reading style. Don’t take it too seriously though – in reality everyone reads for a whole range of reasons and these don’t always stay the same!

New books we recommend

Still stuck for ideas? Here are some of our favourite new books:

Murder Mystery Sleepover

Our Third Form Murder Mystery Sleepover weekends were a resounding success…

To recap, the pupils of Exechester School (any similarities to Exeter School entirely coincidental) gathered in the Butterworth Hall for a special evening talk by celebrity children’s author and Exechester alumna Cate Darling. Little did they know that they were about to become key players in a murder investigation in which they peeked beneath the glossy surface of their beloved school and glimpsed the intrigue, rivalry, jealousy and outright corruption that lies beneath. With codes to crack, computers to hack, locked rooms to escape and red herrings to avoid, this really was a night like no other – and we got to go for a second round as splitting the year group allowed for everyone to get a bit more involved in solving the mystery.
