Pre-Prep Reflections Week 31 May 2025

Dear parents,

It was lovely to see so many Exeter Pre-Prep families at the Devon County Show last Saturday. Our Exeter School stand was buzzing all day and we handed out plenty of pop-up fans, tote bags and snacks to keep the crowds going in the hot weather.

Open morning

On Monday, we held our final open morning of the year for prospective families, with particular interest in Nursery and Reception. As always, the children did a brilliant job of promoting their school and the visitors were very complimentary about what they saw.

Science workshops

On Wednesday, Ms Richards organised for Lou Doliczny, Education Officer from Devon Waste Education Programme, to come into school. Year 1 enjoyed a ‘plastic pirates’ workshop, while Year 2 took part in a workshop on ‘compost and growing plants’. Lou also led a special assembly on recycling for the whole school.

Forest School

Yesterday, Mrs Smyth arranged for Year 1 and Year 2 to have their Forest School sessions over at Exeter School with Simon, Will and Tom from the grounds team. The children learnt about the trees and plants that the junior school children grew from saplings, they potted seeds and plants to take home, visited the poly tunnel, met ‘Bob’ the automatic lawn mower, and learnt about the school compost system. A wonderful end to the half term!

Governor visit

This morning, we welcomed Claire Baillie, one of our education governors, into school for assembly and a walk around lessons with all classes. We saw Nursery practising their CVC words in phonics, Reception and Year 1 mathematics lessons, and a Year 2 computing lesson where we had to guess the animal based on the digital music each child had created on their iPad.

Good luck, Mrs Wannell!

Today was Mrs Wannell’s final day in school for a while; she has now officially started her maternity leave and we wish her well for the safe arrival of her baby girl. I know she has been made to feel very special today with a fairy tale ball in her honour, and lots of lovely messages and gifts. Miss Mulchrone will be starting as our Nursery practitioner after half term and she is excited about getting to know everyone.

I hope you have a good half term and look forward to seeing everyone back in school on Tuesday 3 June.

Spotlight on Reception

This week in Reception we have been concluding our topic work on fairy tales. Our focus text has been Little Red Riding Hood and, in literacy, the children have enjoyed retelling the story in their writing and orally answering comprehension questions. In phonics, we have been learning all about adjacent consonants, which the children have been doing brilliantly with. We have practised this further during shared reading sessions, where the children collaboratively read a text and answered questions together. In mathematics, we have been consolidating our knowledge of ‘one more’ and ‘one less’ of numbers to 20. It has been wonderful to see how well the children are progressing and growing in confidence in their swimming lessons with Mr Ross. It was also lovely to take part in the fairy tale ball with Nursery today. The children dressed up in their party clothes, had a picnic, danced to music and read their favourite stories. We hope you all have a wonderful half term.

Sweetie bags

The Exeter School summer fete, organised by the Family Society, is fast approaching! We would like to show our support by supplying a sweetie bag tombola stall on the day. Each pre-prep child has been given a white paper bag today. Please could they decorate the bag at home however they wish – they can draw, paint, collage, be as creative as they like – as long as the bag remains intact. We would then like you to fill the decorated bag with wrapped sweets/confectionery (no nuts or chilled items, please).

Please could the bags be returned to school after half term, by Wednesday 4 June at the latest. The winning designs will be awarded prizes in assembly on Friday 6 June and then all of the sweetie bags will be taken to the fete on Saturday 7 June. I spoke to the children in assembly about this today. So if you’re going shopping over half term, remember to stock up on sweets! Many thanks in advance for your support.

Whole school theatre trip

Continuing our annual tradition of a whole school theatre trip, this year we have booked to see The Koala Who Could at The Palace Theatre, Paignton. The trip will take place on the morning of Wednesday 4 June 2025. We will be travelling by coach and school minibus, leaving at 9am and returning to school by lunchtime.

The Koala Who Could is a brand-new musical stage adaptation of the best-selling picture book by Rachel Bright and Jim Field. It is an empowering and humorous story about taking a chance and embracing change, set in the Australian Outback. The performance will begin at 10:30am and lasts for 55 minutes.

A letter containing full details of the trip was emailed separately to all parents last Friday. If you have not already done so, please complete the e-consent form here as soon as possible so that we can confirm final numbers with the theatre.
