Pre-Prep Reflections Week 29 May 2025

Dear parents,

We have certainly packed a lot into this shorter four day week and thankfully the weather has been kind to us.

Visitors

Mrs Van came to say hello to everyone on Tuesday morning, closely followed by Ms Simpson who led an assembly for the children all about nurses, in honour of National Nurses’ Day. Yesterday, we welcomed Mrs Imke Polling-Voke, a teacher from Germany who is spending two weeks at Exeter School on an exchange visit. We have also had Miss Mulchrone in school for the last couple of days, spending time with the children and learning the ropes in the Nursery, in readiness for Mrs Wannell’s maternity cover after half term.

Sun safety

On Wednesday, I spoke to the children in assembly about sun safety and reminded them of the five S rules: slip, slop, slap, slide and seek. Hopefully they will be able to tell you what these mean; slip on a T-shirt, slop on some sun cream, slap on a sunhat, slide on some sunglasses, and seek some shade. The children are doing well at applying their own roll-on sun cream as needed and wearing their sunhats outside. If you could ensure that all items are named, including jumpers, sunhats, sunglasses and sun cream, as this really helps us to return them to the right owner.

Open events

It was good to see some of our parents at Exeter School’s open evening last night. I hope you enjoyed the tours. We will be holding our own open morning for prospective families on Monday 19 May, which is set to be a busy one. We will also be at the Devon County Show next week. Ruffles and I will be on the Exeter School stand for most of the day on Saturday 17 May. We’ll be at stand 29, Avenue A – so please do come along and say hello if you are there.

Next week

We are looking forward to meeting the new school nurse, Vanessa Fraser, next week as we approach Florence Nightingale’s birthday. I will be out of school on Wednesday afternoon to attend an IAPS meeting of pre-prep heads at St John’s School, Sidmouth. Mrs Smyth will also be out all day next Thursday on outdoor first aid refresher training, but Forest School sessions will be covered internally.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend and that the good weather holds.

Spotlight on Year 2

We have had a great start to the term in Year 2. Our geography topic this half term is ‘Beside the Seaside’ and we have been learning all about different features of coastal areas. We particularly enjoyed looking at live webcams of UK beaches. We have linked this to our English work on the Devon-based author, Simon James, many of whose books involve the seaside and sea animals. In mathematics, the children have enjoyed learning about column addition, as well as some revision on fractions this week. In science, we started our topic on plants by planting five seeds in different conditions, which we have been observing to see which have grown and which have not. So far this half term, in our ‘Playful Making’ topic in art, we have explored and sketched the work of different sculptors, and then created some wonderful sculptures of our own. In computing, we have been learning about how music can be used in different ways to express emotions and to trigger our imaginations. This week we have experimented with the pitch of notes to create our own piece of digital music. Mrs Higgins is enjoying getting to know everyone and we are all looking forward to a fun and productive final few weeks together.

Forest School

In our Forest School sessions next week, the children will be planting and growing cress seeds. If you have any yoghurt pots or other suitable small containers in your recycling that we could use for this, please wash them and send them in with your child by next Thursday. Many thanks.
