Pre-Prep Reflections 13 March 2026

Dear parents,

The cold, wet snap has been most unwelcome this week, but fortunately we have managed to get outside for most playtimes. In more positive news, we celebrated Ruffles’ 8th birthday yesterday by singing to her in assembly (while she tried to lick the birthday candle) and treating her to some extra watermelon and carrot sticks at lunchtime!

School Council

It was my pleasure to start the week by meeting with the school council reps on Monday morning. We discussed next term’s lunch menus, our new online safety posters, and a range of options for new playground equipment which I am hoping to order over the Easter holidays. We will have our second meeting in the final week of term.

British Science Week

To mark British Science Week, we were pleased to welcome Mr Bone over for a special science assembly on Tuesday morning. As well as being the Acting Head of Exeter School, Mr Bone is also a physics specialist and wowed the children with his demonstrations. Today, our STEM club leader Edd Gorton arrived a little earlier than normal to lead a special science assembly at the end of the day, inspiring much awe and wonder in the children once again!

Interviews

Last week I mentioned that we were holding interviews for a new co-deputy head position this week. Unfortunately, two candidates were unable to make it on Thursday for very good reasons, so we decided to postpone most of the interviews until next week. We did see one candidate on Wednesday and the Reception children took part in an observed mathematics lesson with great enthusiasm. I look forward to announcing the appointment once the interview process has been completed.

Safeguarding Forum

Yesterday I attended the Devon Safeguarding Forum, which I try to do every term in my role as the school’s Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL). In my absence, Mrs Rickard is the Deputy DSL; should you ever wish to share a concern about a child, please contact either of us or email our dedicated safeguarding address: eppssafeguarding@exeterschool.org.uk. One of the tools shared with us at the meeting was the website testfiltering.com which enables you to check that appropriate filtering is in place on any device. It only takes a few seconds and it is recommended that parents spot-check any devices used by children at home to ensure that harmful content is blocked.

Next week

Don’t forget that next Friday is Red Nose Day, which will be a non-uniform day in exchange for a suggested donation of £1-2 per child. The money raised will be sent to Comic Relief, a charity which I will be talking to the children about in assembly next week.

Have a lovely weekend and Happy Mother’s Day for Sunday!

Mr Daniel Ayling

Spotlight on Year 1

Year 1 have had a fantastic start to the half term. We have dived straight into fiction texts in English, looking at a familiar story We are going on a lion hunt! The children have created story maps, acted out parts of the story, used sequential words to re-tell the story, and written descriptions of African animals. In mathematics, we started the half term working on numbers up to 50, focusing on place value and partitioning into tens and ones. We have now moved on to measuring and comparing length and height. In our science lessons, we have been learning about materials, exploring features such as properties, similarities and differences – there have been many material hunts around the school! Our history topic this half term is ‘Nurturing Nurses’ and we have begun to explore significant people in history, including Florence Nightingale. Our computing topic for this half term is ‘Data and Information’; this week we have counted and grouped objects based on what the objects are, then counted groups of objects with the same label. This week’s focus in DT has been to make part of a picture move by using a lever mechanism – all will be revealed on Sunday! We have been very impressed with the progress the children have made over the first half of the academic year and look forward to lots more exciting learning in the run up to Easter.

Spare uniform

We are currently running low on spare uniform items in school for when children need to change clothes, such as when they have had a toileting accident. If you have any unwanted uniform items that you would like to donate to the school for this purpose, we would be very happy to receive them, especially age 3-5 joggers, trousers, socks and pants. We do ask that all children, particularly younger pupils, have a change of clothes in a bag on their peg should they need it. If your child comes home in spare uniform items, we would be really grateful if you could wash and return them as soon as possible. Thank you for your support.

Events reminder

We would like to remind you of some upcoming events taking place in school over the next few weeks:

Red Nose Day

This will be a non-uniform day for all pupils on Friday 20 March, in exchange for a suggested donation of £1-2 towards Comic Relief. This year’s official red nose is available to buy online and they usually sell out quickly.

Parent drop-in

This term’s informal parent drop-in afternoon will take place on Wednesday 25 March. Parents are invited to come in at the earlier time of 3pm to have a look at your child’s work with them in their classroom. Clubs will run as normal from 3.30pm.

Easter assembly

The final day of this term, Wednesday 1 April, will be an off-timetable Easter theme day. Parents are warmly invited to join us for a special Easter assembly at 3pm, where the children will be performing and sharing some of the exciting things they have done throughout the day.

Swimming lessons

Looking to boost your child’s swimming progress over the Easter holidays? Kingfisher Activities are delighted to announce Easter 2026 Crash Courses at Harcombe House, Chudleigh. Please click on the flyer for full details.
