Making time for reading
This year, we’ve been lucky enough to have a ‘book chat’ with every pupil in Third and Fourth form about books and reading. It’s always wonderful to have conversations around books – and we’d definitely recommend doing that at home – but these chats have also revealed a lot about our pupils’ reading habits and we’d love to share some of what they told us.
Some of our pupils undoubtedly enjoy reading more than others, but what came up again and again is that even the keenest readers have to actively make time for reading or end up reading much less. This is why we dedicate some lesson time in Third and Fourth Form to free-choice reading. At home it can be harder to ring-fence time like this, especially with so much competing for our attention, so we asked pupils how they did it in their families.
