Pre-Prep Reflections Week 24 March 2025

Dear parents,

It was lovely to be back in school this week and to receive lots of hugs from the children on my return! The IAPS conference for pre-prep heads up in Leicester was excellent, with a wide range of speakers and seminars, focused on best practice and innovation in Early Years and Key Stage 1.

Miss Moore

Our lunchtime assistant, Miss Moore, is recovering well at home after her recent operation. However, it is unlikely that she will be able to return to work before the end of term. In the meantime, Ms AJ is helping Mr Heath with the daily lunch service, and will therefore not be in the school office between 11.30am and 1pm. Please bear with us if you are trying to telephone at this time.

School visits

On Wednesday morning, I drove down to Teignmouth to visit Trinity School, in a beautiful setting by the sea. I enjoyed meeting the Headmaster and Head of Prep for a tour. It is always good to see how other schools do things and to share ideas. We have leaders from other schools booked in to visit Exeter Pre-Prep next term and look forward to showing them around. Next Wednesday, we have the Chair of Governors, Gillian Hodgetts, spending the morning in school with us.

Red Nose Day

The children and staff looked fabulous today in a vast array of colourful outfits for our non-uniform day, along with a good number of red noses. Thank you for your generous donations which currently total £111.79 for the Comic Relief charity. We also welcomed Alice Holohan, Director of Development and Alumni Relations, over for lunch with the children today, and Ms Simpson popped in this afternoon to say hello to everyone.

Parent Drop-in

It was great to see many of you at this week’s parents’ evening. We hope you found the meetings with teachers useful and came away with a clear idea of your child’s next steps. Don’t forget that next Wednesday is another chance to come and have a look at some of your child’s work with them at our informal parent drop-in afternoon. Please head directly to your child’s class from 3pm if you are able to join us.

Next week

I will be helping with interviews for a new Head of HR over at Exeter School on Monday afternoon, and on Friday we will be holding interviews for Mrs Lawrence-Jones’s maternity cover in school. I am pleased to say that we have had an excellent field of applications for this role and we look set to make a strong appointment. Ms Richards will be out of school next Tuesday afternoon, so Mrs Goodwill will be covering in Year 2. I will be out of school all day on Thursday to attend a strategy day with the Exeter School leadership team and governors.

Have a lovely weekend and let’s hope the nice weather continues.

Mr Daniel Ayling

Spotlight on Year 2

In English, we have learnt about the key features of instruction texts. We also read the story of The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch and wrote a recipe for our own disgusting sandwich. In mathematics, we have just completed a unit of work on mass, volume and capacity, and we were impressed with the children’s use of technical vocabulary and ability to solve challenging multi-step problems. In science, we have been learning about different scientists and inventors, and our lesson this week focused on the work of Rachel Carson. We used some rocks, Duplo, glitter and water to demonstrate how pesticides can run into rivers, seas and oceans. We also played ‘quiz quiz trade’ to learn more facts about her life and work. In computing, we have been learning about how things can be grouped by attribute and presenting this data in the form of a pictogram on the iPads. Our paintings in art have been influenced by the pop artist, Andy Warhol, and the artwork will be revealed soon! We have also started practising our song and poem for the Easter assembly and look forward to sharing this with many of you on the last day of term.

Ms Richards, Mrs Goodwill and Mrs Titchin

Easter Assembly

On the final day of term, Thursday 3 April, we will be running an Easter theme day for the children all day. We warmly invite parents to join us for a special Easter assembly at 3pm in the hall, where the children will be sharing what they have been doing and singing some songs. There is no need to book for this. Please note that the Nursery class is already full on this day and we are unable to accommodate extra bookings.

Chickenpox

We have had two new cases of chickenpox in the Nursery this week. Please be on the lookout for signs. An itchy, spotty rash is the main symptom and this can be anywhere on the body. If your child develops chickenpox, please inform the school as soon as possible, and then keep them off school until all the spots have crusted over. This is usually about five days after the spots first appeared.

Lost property

These glasses were found on a parent’s car earlier this week and handed in to us. The black case is marked ‘Aspect by Mister Spex’. Please let us know if they belong to you so that we can return them.

Swimming

After the Easter break, Reception will be starting their weekly swimming lessons over at Exeter School on Wednesday mornings. We are pleased to be able to retain the Monday afternoon pool slot for Year 2 children to have an additional term of swimming lessons in their two groups. We will write to Reception and Year 2 parents with further details shortly.

Over the Easter break, former head of junior school PE, Kate Wright, will be running an intensive swimming course at her swim school. Please click on the flyer for further details.
