Dr Adrian Rainbow becomes Head of Exeter School in September 2026. He brings deep academic expertise and a passion for pastoral care to this independent school in the heart of Devon.
Dr Rainbow built a strong academic foundation at some of the UK’s leading universities. He earned a PhD in English from the University of Exeter. He also completed an MA in English and a PGCE in English and Drama there. Later, he gained an MA in Educational Leadership and Management from the University of Bath. Before that, he studied English and Philosophy at the University of British Columbia for his BA.
Beyond his academic credentials, Dr Rainbow has built an impressive career in school leadership. He comes to the Headship at Exeter School following the same role at London Park School Mayfair, formerly known as Eaton Square Senior School. Previously, he served as Headmaster at Hampton Court House School. Both schools belong to the Dukes Education group. Before these headships, he worked as Deputy Head at Sevenoaks School, one of the country’s top independent schools. Through each role, he has combined strong leadership with a clear vision for academic excellence.
Dr Rainbow’s appointment marks an exciting moment for this co-educational day school, which welcomes pupils aged three to eighteen. His experience across the Dukes Education group gives him valuable insight into modern independent education. Meanwhile, his grounding in Exeter itself means he understands the city and the community he now serves. Families across Exeter and the wider Southwest can expect strong continuity, clear direction, and renewed energy under his leadership.
Originally from Canada, Dr Rainbow once played competitive American football. Sport still shapes his life today. In his free time, he runs regularly, cooks, reads widely, and explores the arts. This balance between rigour and personal passion mirrors the character education that defines life at Exeter School.
Dr Rainbow feels genuinely honoured to join Exeter School. He was especially drawn to the school’s strong sense of purpose and its long-standing commitment to character education. Since he studied and lived in Exeter for many years, he already considers the Southwest home. Now, he and his family look forward to returning to Devon.
As he begins this new chapter, Dr Rainbow wants to work closely with pupils, staff, families, governors, and alumni. Together, they will build on Exeter School’s proud traditions and shape its future with confidence.
