CCF RAF cadets experience the thrill of gliding
On Saturday, a group of Exeter School CCF RAF cadets travelled to 622 Volunteer Gliding School (VGS) at Upavon for an unforgettable day of gliding. The visit formed part of the RAF section’s adventurous training programme, giving cadets the chance to experience first-hand the excitement and discipline of aviation in a unique and inspiring setting.
The visit coincided with 622 VGS’s annual ‘Longest Day’ event, an impressive challenge that saw the volunteer team aim to fly 100 cadets between 6.00am and 9.10pm—making the most of the extended daylight hours at the height of summer. The event showcased the incredible dedication and commitment of the volunteer instructors, pilots and ground crew, all of whom worked tirelessly to provide as many young people as possible with the opportunity to experience flight.
Although persistent rain delayed flying during the morning, spirits remained high throughout the day. As the weather gradually improved, the team worked efficiently to make up for lost time, ensuring the ambitious schedule remained on track. Exeter School’s cadets took to the skies at around 6.00pm, enjoying ideal conditions and an experience that proved well worth the wait.
An unforgettable aviation experience
For many of the cadets, the opportunity to fly in a glider was the highlight of their RAF section training so far. Unlike powered aircraft, gliders rely on skill, precision and an understanding of the weather, making every flight a fascinating lesson in aviation. From the moment of launch to the peaceful sensation of soaring above the Wiltshire countryside, the experience offered an entirely new perspective and created lasting memories.
Beyond the excitement of flying, the day also reinforced many of the core values of the Combined Cadet Force. Cadets developed confidence, resilience and independence while gaining a greater appreciation for teamwork, communication and the technical skills involved in aviation. Experiences such as these encourage young people to step outside their comfort zones, embrace new challenges and develop qualities that will benefit them both in school and beyond.
The visit is just one example of the varied and enriching opportunities available through Exeter School’s Combined Cadet Force. From fieldcraft and leadership exercises to adventure training and aviation experiences, the CCF provides pupils with opportunities to broaden their horizons, build lifelong friendships and develop valuable life skills in a supportive environment.
Thank you to our hosts
Exeter School extends its sincere thanks to everyone at 622 Volunteer Gliding School for making the day such a memorable success. The enthusiasm, professionalism and generosity of the volunteer pilots, instructors and support staff ensured that every cadet enjoyed a safe, rewarding and inspiring experience, despite the challenging start to the day.
Their commitment to introducing young people to the world of aviation is greatly appreciated, and our cadets returned with fantastic memories, new experiences and an even greater enthusiasm for flight. We look forward to future opportunities to work with 622 VGS and to many more airborne adventures.
