The Music Hall was transformed into a sophisticated night club on Wednesday evening for the Jazz, Rock and Pop Concert. Stage-lighting set up by Miss Smith and operated by U5 pupil Stan M, who also balanced the sound throughout the evening, created the right ambience, which was further complemented by delicious mocktails (sparkling apple juice and elderflower, peach ice tea and cranberry, orange and lemonade), olives and crisps, all provided by Mr Swan’s catering team.
The large audience was treated to a polished and entertaining programme, starting with a quartet featuring Noah P on solo sax, Freddie C on drums, Mr Tamblyn on piano and the bass player who supports the monthly Jazz Club sessions. Jazz Bands 1 and 2 were on excellent form, playing classic big band numbers Ladybird, The Chicken and Fly Me to the Moon and Route 66. Swunk did not disappoint, with some excellent improvised solos from across the band, whilst Swunkette had everyone’s feet tapping, featuring vocals from U6 pupils Rebecca M and Emma T. The concert also featured two pupil-led bands who shifted the genre to more rock than jazz, which were also greatly appreciated by the audience.
The event certainly whetted the appetite for the Jazz Supper on 30 June, which will feature all the bands and more…
