Chamber Concert 2025

Posted: 21st November 2025

Despite a chilly evening, everyone was pleased that this year the Chamber Concert could take place on Tuesday evening – the event was a casualty to snow in 2024.

There was certainly a warm welcome from Mr Tamblyn to both audience and performers, and with the Chapel virtually at capacity, a cosy atmosphere was quickly created.

The Chapel provides a beautiful acoustic for both solo and chamber music, and as part of their A Level performance preparations, Upper Sixth musicians Joshua (joined by oboist Ingrid), Oscar and Rebecca trialled pieces that may well feature in their final recitals. Their fellow music scholar, ‘cellist Austin, also delivered an impressive performance of Adagio by Kodaly, accompanied by Mr Daldorph.

Nine of the smaller senior school ensembles also took to the stage – with a huge variety of instruments and age-range on display. Chamber Choir and Barbershop provided choral interludes, with Barbershop in particular attracting new and enthusiastic younger members this year. Senior and Maxi Brass, both directed by Mr Massey, adopted a Hollywood theme, with Jurassic Park and Selections from The Rise of Skywalker. The Flute, Wind and ‘Cello ensembles all drew their repertoire for the evening from the late 19th century, with pieces by Tchaikovsky, Elgar and Fauré, whilst the Saxes and Stings chose more contemporary works. The common thread was that all were much appreciated by the large audience.

With both the music and drama departments working hard preparing for the school production of Grease, this concert provided the opportunity for a sneak preview of a couple of scenes. It promises to be a great show, so do not delay in securing tickets via MySchoolPortal.

The evening was rounded off by refreshments in the Music Hall, which were much enjoyed by all.
