On Tuesday, Miss Harris took Harry G (Upper Fifth), Gracie S (Upper Fifth) and Sophie J (Lower Sixth) to The Maynard School to compete in the regional heat of the Great Debate, a national debating competition focussed around History, organised by the Historical Association. This year the focus was ‘How can local history tell a global story?’
There were 13 competitors in total, from varying local schools. Each competitor had to give a speech, linking to the proposed focus question and lasting no longer than five minutes. Harry focussed on the Western Rebellion of 1549, Gracie on the history of the Torbay Paint Company and Sophie with the remnants of Cold War bunkers across the South West.
The heat was judged by four local judges; a lecturer from Exeter University and three local Red Coats.
Only one pupil out of the 13 was selected to go to the next round. Unfortunately, none of the three were successful this time however all three of our pupils did amazingly. They spoke confidently, and will all make great orators in the future!
Sophie J was, however, announced as the only pupil to be runner up – an outstanding feat!
Miss Harris commented “It was a pleasure to take the pupils along to this competition – they behaved as exemplary Exonians, and I was proud to have them represent the school in such a challenging competition”.
