Pre-Prep Reflections Week 34 June 2025

Dear parents,

What a glorious, hot, sunny week it has been! The children have coped well with the heat and it has been lovely to retreat to the relative coolness of our chapel building after spending time outside. We have certainly had lots of opportunities to remind the children about sun safety. Please may we remind you to ensure that they have a sun hat and refillable water bottle in school. They are also welcome to bring sunglasses and sun cream.

Prospective Heads

This week I have been whizzing back and forth to Exeter School to meet candidates for the role of the new Head, who will succeed Ms Simpson in September 2026. The governors will be making their final decision and announcing the appointment shortly. In the interim, Mr Graham Bone will be Acting Head of Exeter School for the year 2025-26, and this week we released a short video introducing him to the school community.

Neighbours

The owner of the property next door to the school has asked me to remind parents to kindly not park across the driveway that we share, and to be mindful of children playing in the woodland area just outside the school gates. There have been reports of children emerging suddenly from the trees and running into the neighbouring driveway, as well as weeing out there, which is obviously not desirable! Children are always welcome to come back into school to use the toilet. Please can I ask for your support in being respectful to our neighbours so that we maintain good relationships with them.

Non-uniform day

Following a parental suggestion, we have decided to make the final day of term (Wednesday 9 July) a non-uniform day, so that children can enjoy wearing their own clothes to the end of year party that morning. If you would like to donate any unwanted uniform items to the school, clean and in good condition, we would be happy to accept these on the last day.

Next week

We have lots of trips taking place next week! I am looking forward to joining Year 2 at Paignton Zoo on Tuesday; Year 1 are visiting Middlemoor Fire Station in Exeter on Thursday morning; and Reception will be spending the day at Dawlish Warren on Friday.

Have a great weekend and enjoy the sunshine.

Spotlight on Year 1

Year 1 have had an enjoyable and busy week. In English, we have been learning about the past, present and future tenses and we enjoyed linking this to the story Arlo the Lion who Couldn’t Sleep. In mathematics, we have been learning about telling the time, sequencing events in chronological order and using time language to describe when different events occur. The children have all been very enthusiastic about our Great Fire of London history topic. This week we learnt more about the events of the fire and how it spread. We then enjoyed our dance lesson where the children considered how they could move their bodies to represent the fire and the water used to put it out. In science, we learnt about the role of vets and we identified different problems animals may face and what treatments could be used to help them recover. The children have been developing their coding skills using the animation programme ScratchJr, and they enjoyed designing their own space race project in this week’s computing lesson. On Friday afternoon, the children had a double DT lesson with Mrs Goodwill, designing and making their own model windmills. We have been so impressed with their enthusiasm and hard work this week.

End of Year events

Transition afternoon

On Wednesday 2 July, all children will be moving up to their next classroom to spend the afternoon with their new teachers and teaching assistants. Any new children due to join the school in September are also invited to this event. At the end of the day, parents are welcome to come into the classrooms for an informal ‘meet the teacher’ session, where we will provide some further information about the year ahead. If you are unable to attend, please do not worry; we will ensure the information is sent home to you. Current Year 2 pupils who are going to Exeter School next year will be transported over to the junior school for the afternoon.

Sports Day

Mrs Smyth is planning a whole week of sports events from Monday 30 June, culminating in our annual Sports Day on Friday 4 July. This event is held outside from 1.30-3.30pm and all parents are welcome to attend. There will be no football club after school, but STEM club will run in the hall. Fingers crossed for good weather!

Parent drop-in

On Monday 7 July, we will be holding our final parent drop-in of the year from 3pm. All parents are welcome to come into your child’s classroom and look at a selection of their work from this year. You will then be able to take most of their books and folders home, so please bring a strong carrier bag that can hold heavy items.

Summer showcase and prize giving

On Tuesday 8 July, all children will be taking part in our annual summer showcase in the hall, which parents are invited to attend. This starts at 2.30pm and will include performances from each class, soloists and whole school singing. We will also be presenting every child with a personalised certificate recognising their individual achievements this year, as well as saying farewell to our Year 2 pupils. This event is not to be missed!

Final day of term

The last day of term, Wednesday 9 July, will be a non-uniform day. Our drama club leader Ruth Lawrence will be running her usual end of year party for all children in the hall. We are also planning to have an outdoor disco in the afternoon, which should be lots of fun!

Please note that there will be no clubs in the final week of term (7-9 July) with the exception of drama club on Monday 7 July. However, Late Room will be running as normal until 5.30pm every evening.

Sports Week

From 30 June to 4 July, we will be hosting our very own Sports Week! Throughout the week, children will be participating in a variety of fun and engaging sporting activities, as well as meeting various sportspeople and athletes.

There will be opportunities to explore mindfulness, health, social and emotional wellbeing, as well as learning about sports science. We are fortunate to have some fun workshops for different year groups throughout the week, culminating in our annual Sports Day event on the afternoon of Friday 4 July.

We would like all children to come into school wearing their PE kit every day during Sports Week. They are also encouraged to bring in a bike or scooter from home as indicated on the timetable below.
