Pre-Prep Reflections Week 19 2024

Dear parents,

This week, we have been celebrating Children’s Mental Health Week with daily breathing exercises in the morning and short wellbeing walks around the grounds after lunch. Tuesday was Safer Internet Day and I had the pleasure of running mini workshops with each class throughout the day. The UK Safer Internet Centre has a range of tips, advice and guidance for parents on their website if you would like to find out more.

Quiz Night

Thank you to those of you who came along to the parent and staff quiz night at Exeter School last Friday. We had a fun evening and raised lots of money for charity. Congratulations to the junior staff team who won the quiz, while the pre-prep staff came in a very respectable third place!

Open morning

Our ‘school in action’ open morning on Wednesday was one of the busiest we have ever had, despite the rainy weather. There was a great buzz in the hall and in classrooms, and it is always nice to hear visitors say that they have heard great things about our school. Many of the positive recommendations come from our current parents, so thank you for your support.

Reception trip to Pizza Express

Yesterday, we waved the Reception children off on the red bus as they drove down to Pizza Express in Plymouth. They have been focusing on all things to do with Italy recently, and what better way to learn about Italian food than to make your own pizza! The children were impeccably behaved and clearly enjoyed the morning – and the bus journey! Thank you to Mrs Martin, Mrs Dray and Mr Heath for organising this wonderful trip and taking such good care of the children.

Lost property

Jeremiah in Year 2 is missing his navy PE jumper. It is aged 7-8 and named ‘Summerfield’. We have looked everywhere in school and wonder whether it has gone home with another child. If found, please could it be returned to one of the Year 2 teachers. Thank you.

Congratulations to Year 2

Parents of Year 2 pupils will have been contacted by Exeter School today about the results of the 7+ entrance assessments last week. I am pleased to say that, once again, our children did very well, with 15 of them being offered a place. Congratulations to Olivia, Serena, Edward and Joanne who also achieved awards for the highest overall marks. The top 7 results were all secured by Exeter Pre-Prep pupils. We are very proud of all our Year 2s and my thanks go to all the staff who have contributed to this success by playing their part in each child’s journey from Nursery to Year 2.

I wish you all a very restful and relaxing half term. A reminder that we return to school on Wednesday 21 February, following two staff inset days on 19-20 February. And a happy Chinese New Year to all of our Chinese community. Gong Xi Fa Cai!

Spotlight on Year 2

We have had another busy few weeks in Year 2. In mathematics, we have been looking at the relationship between the different mathematical operations. We have looked again at multiplication and division and learnt how arrays can be used to help solve problems. Our theme throughout the term in English has been ‘fact or fiction’ and, over the last couple of weeks, we have looked at alien poetry. We have studied a number of humorous poems from Brian Moses’ book ‘Aliens Stole My Underpants’, which we have all enjoyed. In science, we have been learning about materials and the children were particularly interested in the session on recycling. We are excited to announce that our materials topic will be concluded after half term with a workshop in school led by the education team at Recycle Devon. To conclude our ‘magical mapping’ topic in geography, we have been learning about human and physical features, and we have enjoyed using Google Earth on the iPads to locate the world’s five main oceans. In art, we have continued to learn about simple printmaking, exploring both incise and relief printing methods with some wonderful results. Our focus in computing has been on designing algorithms, programming a floor robot and then debugging an algorithm if an error occurs. We cannot believe that we have already reached February half term and want to say a big thank you for all of your support. The children have made excellent progress since the start of the year and we are very proud of them all.

International Day

Today was our first ever International Day at Exeter Pre-Prep. This is a new event that we have been planning for a while, and it was our first opportunity to group the children in their new houses for the day. The children visited five continents throughout the day:

  • Africa in assembly with Mr Ayling – the children listened to African music and learnt about Africa’s different habitats, including savannas, deserts and rainforests.
  • Asia with Miss Lawrence and Mrs Tyler – the children went to China for a food tasting workshop, and had a spring roll cookery demonstration with Mr Heath.
  • Europe with Mrs Martin and Mrs Dray – the children went to Italy, learnt some of the Italian language and made gelato ice-creams.
  • Australia with Mrs Goodwill and Mrs Titchin – the children went to Australia and took part in an art activity, making their own Australian flags.
  • America with Mrs Wannell and Mr Ayling – the children went to the USA and learnt a cheerleading dance routine to Taylor Swift’s Shake It Off.

The children were given their own passport and had to collect stamps and stickers on completion of each workshop, as well as earning those all-important house point tokens! At the end of the day, each child was given a fortune cookie to take home, to mark Lunar New Year. It was lovely to see children from Nursery to Year 2 working together in mixed age groups. We hope the children enjoyed the day as much as we did!

Early Birds

Due to circumstances beyond our control, we are unable to operate Early Birds from 7.30am after half term. Instead, Early Birds will move to the slightly later start time of 8am. We hope this will be on a temporary basis and apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Reading Books

We have had a small number of requests for extra reading books to be sent home over the half term break. Unfortunately, we are unable to do this unless there are special circumstances. The holiday periods are the only times we have to audit our stock of reading books so that we can see what needs to be removed, updated and ordered. We recommend trying the Oxford Owl e-library, which is free to use, and/or visiting your local library, which will have lots of fun activities running over half term.
