Pre-Prep Reflections Week 14 January 2026

Dear parents,

Happy New Year! It is lovely to have the children back in school and to hear all about the excitement of the Christmas holidays. This week we have been reflecting on New Year’s resolutions, having an attitude of gratitude, and how to be helpful herons. Nursery and Reception have been fascinated by all the ice in their outdoor area, and yesterday they made marmalade sandwiches as part of their new Paddington Bear topic. Meanwhile, Years 1 and 2 have been busy making bird feeders at Forest School to help see the birds through the winter months. The children have settled quickly and sensibly back into their routines, despite the challenging weather, and we look forward to an exciting spring term ahead.

Individual music lessons

Piano lessons with Mr Savage started on Wednesday and all the children were very positive about their first go! Apologies for the slight delay with Mrs Davies’ lessons while we were waiting for her recruitment checks to be finalised; these are now complete and she will start teaching next Tuesday.

Nativity recording

The nativity recording has now been edited and is available for parents to view. Many thanks to Richard Fryer, volunteer archivist at Exeter School, who films and edits this special dress rehearsal for us every year. The link has been emailed to all parents separately today.

Lost property

Eloise in Nursery is missing a brand new school cardigan. Please could you check to see whether this has come home with your child by mistake. Our uniform provider, School Blazer, will sew name labels into all items in your basket for £3.00 – please ensure you select this option when you checkout online. All children must also have a pair of welly boots in school to wear outside. Please can I ask you to have a quick check of your child’s welly boots when you get a chance, to make sure they still fit and are watertight!

Open morning

Our next ‘school in action’ open morning for prospective families will be held on Wednesday 25 February. Demand for places at Exeter Pre-Prep remains high and we are therefore advising prospective parents to register their children early so they don’t miss out when places become available. As always, word of mouth through positive recommendation is our most powerful marketing tool, so please do share the date with anyone who you think may be interested in joining us.

In other news, you will have seen Mr Bone’s message yesterday outlining the changes announced at Exeter Cathedral School for the next academic year. While this news brings with it a sense of real sadness, we are also genuinely pleased to be able to play our part in preserving the city’s outstanding choral tradition. If you have not yet read Mr Bone’s message, please do follow the link shared yesterday.

Have a great weekend!

Mr Daniel Ayling

Spotlight on Year 2

Happy New Year! It has been wonderful to hear all about the children’s exciting Christmas holidays and see their big smiles as they shared their news. This week, we have been thinking about New Year’s resolutions, and the children created some bright and fantastic resolution stars. In English, we loved reading all about the children’s favourite Christmas presents. Our classroom has been buzzing with ideas as the children then went on to design and describe their very own creatures. In mathematics, we have returned to learning about money, and Year 2 have done an amazing job counting pounds and pence with confidence. In geography, the children became map-makers and created super plans of the local area around our school. Forest School was full of fun as the children made bird feeders to help care for wildlife in the winter. The children also had great fun starting a new dance topic in PE, practising sharp, controlled movements and creating their own robot-style routines. It has been fantastic to welcome Year 2 back after the Christmas break, full of enthusiasm, excitement, and ready for a brilliant new year of learning!

Keep Me Close fundraising

Twin sisters Ella and Sophia in our Nursery class have raised a fantastic £420 for the Keep Me Close charity over Christmas! The charity supports families with babies that are being cared for in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Derriford Hospital. The team here are a very special part of Ella and Sophia’s lives, as they cared for the girls when they arrived at 25 weeks and spent their first 17 weeks in hospital.
