Pre-Prep Reflections Week 10 November 2024

Dear parents,

Snow disruption

What an exciting day we had yesterday with the snow and ice! While it caused some disruption for the adults, the children certainly enjoyed it. For many of them, it was the first time they had seen snow in their lifetime, and they had fun making snowmen, snow angels and snowballs, as well as exploring the remaining ice and frost today. We were fortunate to be able to keep the school open as most staff and pupils made it in safely. Thank you for bearing with us with the cancellation of clubs and buses at the end of the day.

Safeguarding visit

On Monday, we welcomed two visitors from Exeter School: Ali Dunning, Deputy Head (Pupil Development, Welfare and Wellbeing), and Jess Doku, Head of Safeguarding. They enjoyed chatting to the children and watching some of the Year 2 nativity rehearsals. We then met to discuss ways in which we can work closely together to ensure our approach to safeguarding, child protection and attendance is consistent across the pre-prep, junior and senior schools.

Entry to Year 3 talk

On Wednesday afternoon, we held an Entry to Year 3 information meeting for parents. This is the first time we have done this, at the request of parents via the class reps. We hope those who were able to attend found it useful to hear more about how we prepare the children, transition arrangements and the admissions process, as well as being able to ask questions. We have sent home notes from the meeting to any Year 2 parents who could not attend, and we plan to make this talk an annual fixture on the calendar in future years.

Autumn Reviews

If your child was in school today, you will find an A4 envelope in their bag with their autumn review inside, together with a letter outlining how we report to parents throughout the year. Thanks to the teachers for their hard work on these and we hope you enjoy reading them. If your child joined the Nursery very recently, they will not have been issued with a review at this stage.

Next week

We look forward to meeting with you at parentsโ€™ evening on Wednesday to talk more about your childโ€™s progress so far this term. Your appointment time will have been emailed to you if you have booked online.

Have a wonderful weekend and keep warm!

Mr Daniel Ayling

Spotlight on Year 2

We have had an exciting week in Year 2! In English, we have enjoyed reading The Hodgeheg by Dick King-Smith, and have used the story to learn lots about hedgehogs, with the aim of writing our own non-chronological reports next week. This has linked to our work on โ€˜living things and their habitatsโ€™ in science, where we have learnt about what animals need to survive. In mathematics, we have focused on multiplication and used visual representations to help the children understand the concept. Our history topic this half term is โ€˜war and remembranceโ€™, and the children have enjoyed creating poppies for our class display. This weekโ€™s lesson focused on life on the front line during World War I. In our computing lessons, we have been working hard to improve our digital photography skills. In art, the children have been using collage, printing and painting to create a beautiful piece of artwork – all will be revealed towards the end of term! We have also made a start on our nativity play and the children are all very excited about their leading roles. We are looking forward to sharing this with you in a few weeks.

Ms Richards, Mrs Goodwill and Mrs Titchin

Pre-Prep Disco

The Family Society’s Pre-Prep Disco is on Wednesday 4 December from 3.45-4.45pm. You are welcome to pick up your child at the end or come and stay for a coffee in the Year 2 classroom – a good opportunity to catch up with fellow parents and kickstart the festive season whilst the children throw some moves on the dance floor! Tickets are ยฃ5 per child and can be bought on the new Family Society website: https://esfs.org.uk/. The password is ESFS1633. Please note that you do not need to buy a ticket if you have already paid Sporty Stars for your child to attend multi-sports club that day. Art Club will not be running and Zoe will be in touch regarding her invoices. All children are welcome to bring their disco clothes into school so that they can change at the end of the day in their classrooms.

Nativity 2024

We are already looking forward to this yearโ€™s school Christmas play, which will feature a traditional nativity play set within the story of The Polar Express – with a fair amount of artistic licence, of course! You will receive a slip in your childโ€™s reading diary explaining their role and some costume suggestions. We would be grateful if you could provide a costume for your child in a named bag by Friday 6 December. You are welcome to bring their costume into school before this date. Please do let us know if you have any questions or difficulty sourcing a costume as we would be very happy to help. Each class teacher has chosen the roles for their class, so please speak directly to them in the first instance if you have any questions. Thank you in advance for your support.

Ms Richards, Deputy Head

Parent Drop-in

All parents are warmly invited to join us for the first informal drop-in afternoon of the year. These take place each term and are an opportunity for you to sit with your child while they share some of their recent work with you before they go home or to clubs. The first drop-in will be on Tuesday 10 December from 3.00-3.30pm. Please go directly to your childโ€™s classroom if you are able to join us.

Christmas Post Box

Some advanced warning that, from Monday 2 December, the annual Christmas post box will be out in the hall for children to post Christmas cards to their friends and staff in school, if they would like to. This is a great opportunity to practise writing and reading skills! The cards will be delivered to classrooms by Year 2 pupils on a regular basis until the end of term. Please ensure that the recipientโ€™s name and class are clearly written on the envelope to avoid confusion. Thank you.
