Pre-Prep Reflections Week 1 September 2025

Dear parents,

Welcome back to the new school year! A very warm welcome to all our new children and their families. We are delighted to have new children in all classes with more due to start in the Nursery class this term. Despite the sudden downpours, the children have done amazingly well at getting back into the swing of things this week, including after-school clubs. If you haven’t managed to book these yet, please contact Mrs Salt in the school office to see what spaces we have available. It was also great to see so many parents at our Welcome Evening on Wednesday. We hope you found the information useful.

Staff news

Our new staff are also settling in well to the school. Miss Wheller has had a great first week with her Year 2 class who have made her very welcome, and Mrs Salt has been busy learning the ropes in the school office and chaperoning on the shuttle bus. Congratulations to Mrs Dray, our Nursery Leader, who successfully passed her Level 5 diploma in Early Years leadership over the summer holidays. This has taken lots of hard work over the past two years and we are all so proud of her. Mrs Dray will be continuing her studies this year by commencing a Level 6 course with the Open University to become a fully qualified teacher.

Pupil and sibling photographs

Sadly the whole school photo over at Exeter School had to be cancelled this week due to the poor weather forecast. However, on Monday, we have Pret-a-Portrait Photography in school all morning to take individual and sibling photographs. If you have a child in Nursery who does not attend school on Mondays, you are welcome to bring them in for a photograph at 9am if you would like to.

School uniform

Please may I remind you that all children need to have a coat and welly boots in school at all times. The children look very smart in their new uniform, and they are welcome to continue wearing the old uniform items until September 2028. Our new supplier, Schoolblazer, are now stocking all-in-one waterproof playsuits for Forest School if you would like your child to have their own one.

Data Collection Forms

Please have a look in your child’s bookbag for a white A4 envelope, which contains a letter and a data collection form. Each year, we ask parents to check the information and ensure that it is up to date. We would be most grateful if you could follow the instructions in the letter and return the form to us by Friday 19 September so that we can update our records. Thank you for your support.

Impetigo

We have had one case of impetigo reported in Reception class this week. Please click here to read the NHS guidance on this skin infection. If you suspect your child may have impetigo, please inform the school and seek treatment. Children will need to remain at home for 48 hours after treatment to avoid the spread of infection.

Next week

We are holding our first open morning of the year for prospective families on Thursday next week, from 9.30am. As always, word of mouth is our strongest recommendation, so please do pass the details on to anyone who you think may be interested in having a tour of the school. I will also be aiming to set up Tapestry accounts for new Nursery and Reception parents next week, so please look out for an activation email.

Mr Daniel Ayling

New baby

Over the weekend, we heard from Mrs Lawrence-Jones, who gave birth to a beautiful baby boy, named Marlowe. Mum and baby are both doing well. Many congratulations to Annabel and Greg on the new addition to their family. We look forward to seeing them soon.

Swimming

We are looking forward to swimming lessons starting next week for Years 1 and 2.

Year 2

Swimming lessons will take place on Monday afternoons at Exeter School, taught by Mr Dutch. The class will be split into two smaller groups, each swimming for alternate half-terms throughout the year. A letter has been emailed to parents with the group lists and dates. As the lesson is in the afternoon, please can the children come to school in uniform on Monday, ready to change at the pool.

Year 1

Swimming lessons will take place on Wednesday mornings at Exeter School, taught by Mr Dutch. All Year 1 pupils will swim every week throughout the autumn and spring terms. Please can the children come to school in PE kit on Wednesdays with their swimming costumes underneath.

The children will also need the following items in a waterproof bag:

  • Large towel
  • Hairbrush (please also ensure that long hair is tied back or plaited securely)
  • Goggles (please ensure that these fit comfortably)
  • The children may want to have a rash vest or other swimming top over their swimming clothes to help keep them warm in the pool, especially if they are a non-swimmer
  • Swimming hats are optional.

Reception

Swimming lessons will take place in the summer term and we will inform parents nearer the time of the arrangements for this.

Year 2 Leadership Roles

Congratulations to our Year 2 children who have been assigned the following leadership roles for this half term. Badges, lanyards and caps will be presented in assembly next week. These roles rotate every half term so that the children experience different responsibilities across the year.

Heritage Open Day

We are pleased to be taking part in the Heritage Open Day scheme again this year, England’s largest festival of history and culture. Every September, the festival gives people the chance to visit thousands of historic buildings all over the country that are not normally open to the public, free of charge. Our beautiful converted chapel will be open for self-guided tours on Sunday 21 September from 11am-1pm. Please share this with any friends or family who might like to visit and learn more about our historic listed building. Full details can be found here.
