Pre-Prep Reflections 27 March 2026

Dear parents,

The last full week of the spring term began with Mrs Landy and Mrs Linton completing their full paediatric first aid qualifications, and ended with interviews for a new Head of Lower School over at the junior school today. In between, we have had the arrival of a new baby (see further down), some very high winds causing slight havoc around our grounds, and lots of exciting learning taking place as usual!

Ready for Anything

On Tuesday morning, we held our first ‘ready for anything’ practice. This is a new legal requirement for all schools to create, rehearse and inform visitors of a ‘ready for anything’ lockdown procedure, in case of emergencies. In order not to frighten the children, we started with an assembly explaining what was going to happen and sharing various scenarios to explain why it was important to be able to ‘invacuate’, such as smoke from a nearby fire, a swarm of insects, an unfamiliar intruder, a gas leak, or a wild animal roaming loose! We then took the children outside and sounded the siren. They all did a brilliant job of walking quickly, calmly and quietly back into the building via the nearest door, with everyone sat in the hall and registered in just over 2 minutes! Many of you will be aware that a similar lockdown drill took place at Exeter School this week and we will be reviewing and tweaking the process where necessary before rehearsing again next term.

Parent drop-in

It was lovely to see so many parents at the drop-in afternoon on Wednesday. We hope you enjoyed looking through some of the children’s work with them. I certainly enjoyed walking around and seeing the children being so proud of their progress. If you weren’t able to join us this time, please do contact your child’s class teacher and they will be happy to arrange a time for you to come in and have a look at some work at another time. Our next parent drop-in will be on Monday 6 July.

Reminders

Online booking forms for next term’s lunches and clubs were emailed to parents this week. We would be most grateful if you could complete these promptly so that Mrs Landy may finalise the information by the end of term. Thank you for your support.

Next week

There is a lot to pack into the final three days of term before we finish for the Easter break on Wednesday. I am looking forward to my second meeting with the school council on Monday, where we will be unpacking some deliveries that they helped me order earlier this term. Wednesday will be an off-timetable Easter theme day, with the children grouped in their houses for various interactive workshops. Please do join us at 3pm in the hall for a special Easter assembly if you are able to. After school clubs will be running as normal for those who would like to stay on, as will Late Room.

Have a lovely weekend and I look forward to next week with great egg-citement!

Spotlight on Nursery

This week in Nursery, we have continued exploring our topic of minibeasts. Our story of the week was Superworm by Julia Donaldson, and the children used a variety of minibeast models in the tuff tray to act out different parts, showing great imagination and developing their storytelling skills. We also went on an exciting minibeast hunt around the school grounds! The children carefully searched for creatures in different areas. We were delighted to find lots of worms, and the children had great fun recalling and repeating the chant from the story together. In mathematics, we revisited 3D shapes; the children impressed us with their growing knowledge, confidently naming a range of shapes and describing their properties. They particularly enjoyed playing our ‘Guess which shape is in the bag’ game, using their sense of touch to identify each shape. We have also been working hard at practising our song for the Easter assembly, which we are very excited to perform for you on Wednesday afternoon!

New baby

You may have heard that Ms Richards had her baby yesterday – a few days later than expected and at 12:58 in the morning, weighing 6lbs 10oz. Despite the helpful suggestions of ‘Moana’ and ‘Snow White’ from the Year 1 children, she is as yet unnamed! Mum and baby are both doing well, and Isabella is enjoying being a big sister. Many congratulations on the new addition to the family and we look forward to meeting her soon.

Sponsored Bounce

You may know that Mrs Van is running the London Marathon (for the second time!) on Sunday 26 April in aid of the NSPCC. She has already smashed her fundraising target, and we would like to help her take this even further by holding an ALL DAY Sponsored Bounce at Exeter Pre-Prep. This will take place on Tuesday 21 April, just after the Easter break. The children will take turns to bounce on one of three mini trampolines for 3 minutes at a time, the aim being for us to have children bouncing continuously from 8.30am to 3.30pm. NSPCC sponsor forms will be sent home next week so that the children can start collecting sponsorship pledges. We hope this will be a fun event for a great cause, and we wish Mrs Van all the best with the final stages of her training.
