Junior Reflections Week 9 November 2025

Dear parents,

Well, the temperature has certainly dropped, and I have had to dig out my winter woollies and finally put the heating on. There was a lot of excitement amongst the pupils about the possibility of snow, but sadly it was not to be this week, and no snow days on the horizon either.

It has been another busy week with Monday’s assembly, taken by Rev Close, on celebrating our differences. Rev Close helped us reflect on how it is our differences that make us unique and what makes life so much fun. We looked at Colossians 3:12 and thought about the idea of wearing kindness like a coat wherever we go.

In the classroom many of the Upper School pupils have taken part in the national Primary Maths Challenge competition. The pupils from Lower Two (Year 5) and Upper Two (Year 6) pitted themselves against some tricky maths questions and enjoyed challenging themselves. We await the results which should be in next week! The buddy lunch took place, with conversation cards on the table to help spark some cheerful chats and connections. There were lots of smiles, laughter and new friendships formed. These lunches are always such a highlight for our pupils, and I know how much both the older and younger pupils alike enjoy this event. Wednesday saw our pianists take to the stage for the second of our informal concerts; well done to all who played.

It’s been an action-packed week of sport at Exeter School! From the U11 football team competing in the EFL Kids’ Cup at Exeter City’s training ground, to a thrilling swimming gala against Taunton School, our pupils have shown incredible skill and determination. Later in the week, Lower School impressed in hockey and rugby fixtures against St Peter’s, while the U11 girls shone in the Devon hockey tournament—perfect preparation for next week’s IAPS finals—alongside further rugby and hockey matches against Stover. What a fantastic week of energy, teamwork, and sporting spirit across the school. Phew… I don’t know where the pupils (or staff) get their energy from.

On Wednesday, our pupils were treated to an incredible Thai-inspired feast. The dining room was filled with the aromas of Pad Thai, fragrant beef noodles, and crunchy rice crackers. For those who preferred something more traditional, a classic roast dinner was also on offer. We are truly fortunate to enjoy such a diverse and delicious menu—thank you to Graeme Swan and the entire catering team for making lunchtime such a highlight of the day.

Tonight, the dancing shoes will be making an appearance with the junior school disco kicking off at 5pm for the Lower School and then 6:30 for the Upper School. A gentle reminder that drop off is via the dining room entrance along Lower Drive and pick up is from the junior school playground. Tomorrow, we welcome children from our local community to have a taste of what we do at Exeter Junior School in our Inspiring Minds morning, giving them the opportunity to have a lesson in the pool, create a masterpiece in art and blow their minds in science… just everyday events in the junior school.

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend… only 34 days to Christmas!!

Senior production of Grease

This year the senior school production is a musical. We are performing the crowd favourite, ‘Grease’. This is the schools’ version so is appropriate for all ages.  Come along and have a sing or a dance to the memorable tunes – there are a number of the excellent songs from the film. We have hired an amazing set with a working car, so it should be really exciting.

We have two casts performing on different nights and they have been working really hard learning all the songs and dances and developing some fantastic characters. This should be a fantastic night of entertainment as we watch the outsider, Sandy, navigate the challenges of integrating herself into a new high school – finding new friends and fighting off the advances of the high school boys. Feel free to come dressed up in your best 1950’s outfit or if you want, come as a t-bird or pink lady!

Performances take place on Thursday 4, Friday 5 and Saturday 6 December at 7.30pm in the main hall. Please note: Friday 5 December is now SOLD OUT.

Ticket Prices: Adult £12 / Child £8

A huge good luck to Max, Isaac, Seb and Spencer today as they complete the last day of @gchq's National Language Competition. The online event has been running all week and is a virtual competition for teams of 13-14 year olds from around the UK to compete against each other to solve language-based challenges and score points. They can log in at different times to complete their tasks around their studies so if you see them around, ask how they're doing! We'll bring you the outcome next week ☺️🤞 #nlc2025 #nationallanguagecompetition #exeterschools #modernforeignlanguages

An unforgettable day for four Exeter School musicians who performed at the Royal Albert Hall last week, as part of the Devon Youth Jazz Orchestra's appearance in the prestigious Music for Youth Schools Prom 🎶 Current pupils Rebecca and Sebastian, along with 2025 leavers Henry and Charlie were part of the big band playing Giddy Up! and Apollo's Reel, with Charlie taking an improvised solo. A huge well done to all four pupils for representing the school so brilliantly! 👏 #ExeterSchool #ExeterMusic #InspireAndChallenge #RoyalAlbertHall #DYJO #PupilAchievement #DevonSchools
