Cookery club pupils after making pasties

Junior Reflections Week 10 November 2025

Dear parents,

The weeks are flying past, and it is beginning to feel a lot like Christmas in the junior school, with carols being sung and the glitter and sequins starting to make an appearance, and not just at the disco.

The theme of the week was Challenge, one of our virtues, and we shared the importance of challenging yourself even when things get tough. Henry in Upper Two has taken on the challenge of learning to juggle and will perform in assembly next week and there is going to be a head-to-head between myself and Rev Close in a couple of weeks’ time. One pupil mentioned how cool it would be if I did flame juggling… mmmm, not sure there is a risk assessment to cover that one!

Our Upper Two pupils who took part in Comets Club this week had a fantastic time exploring the Sierpinski Triangle. Led by Mr Hall in the senior school, the children were fascinated to discover the relationships between the patterns and the number of triangles involved. They created their own fractals, never-ending patterns that repeat at any scale, and used colour to showcase their designs. They also learned about the Koch snowflake, another type of fractal, before being challenged to create the snowflake for themselves. Their designs look great, and they were intrigued to learn about the maths involved. Well done, Comets Club!

Thursday saw many new children welcomed to the school as they joined us for a school in action taster day. Our pupils, as always, embodied our virtue of welcome and serve and there were a lot of smiling faces as we returned our visitors to their parents at the end of the day.

As I write, our U11 hockey team are competing in the IAPS National Hockey finals in Haileybury, Hertfordshire. I await their results with keen anticipation; we have our fingers crossed for them and will report the outcome next week. Today, we also held our interviews for Mr Wood’s replacement as Deputy Head, and the candidates were blown away with our pupils and the school site. I will of course, keep you updated once a decision has been made.

Senior production of Grease

This year the senior school production is a musical. We are performing the crowd favourite, ‘Grease’. This is the schools’ version so is appropriate for all ages.  Come along and have a sing or a dance to the memorable tunes – there are a number of the excellent songs from the film. We have hired an amazing set with a working car, so it should be really exciting.

We have two casts performing on different nights and they have been working really hard learning all the songs and dances and developing some fantastic characters. This should be a fantastic night of entertainment as we watch the outsider, Sandy, navigate the challenges of integrating herself into a new high school – finding new friends and fighting off the advances of the high school boys. Feel free to come dressed up in your best 1950’s outfit or if you want, come as a t-bird or pink lady!

Performances take place on Thursday 4, Friday 5 and Saturday 6 December at 7.30pm in the main hall. Please note: Friday 5 December is now SOLD OUT.

Ticket Prices: Adult £12 / Child £8

Happy National Scone day! How do you eat yours? Keep a keen eye on the video note for our preference although we've sandwiched it together in the visual so as not to offend anyone who opts for alternatives😆

At the end of 'The Butterfly Lion', Michael Morpurgo discovers he's been taking tea with a ghost. We tasked our junior school poets with a little extension project to write a poem about this. Here is the poem from Bella in Upper One (Year 4) which we love.

Like Delilah and Rosalila, Benjy is preparing for the trip of a lifetime following his A Levels and is off to Peru with @projecttrust. Here, we see how hearing from alumni helped him to make the decision about whether volunteering overseas was the right choice for him. Various futures events are run throughout sixth form life and before to prepare pupils for the real world.

If you'd like to support Benjy raise the £6.5k he needs to get on his way, please go to his Just Giving link in the Linktree in our bio.

@exeterschool_alumni thank you for the inspiration you give to current pupils.

Yesterday, we heard from Delilah in U6 who is off to Honduras in January and today is Rosalila in L6's turn. She'll be off to Peru for 8 months the year after next. Following her mother and her brothers' experiences with @projecttrust, she's excited about the experiences it will bring her to prepare for a course in human sciences/geography at uni later.

We love the opportunities available for pupils out there, encouraging their younger peers to think big about the differences they can make in the world and will be bringing these to you over the coming months.

Anyone wishing to support Rosalila's fundraising will be able to do so shortly through school newsletters.

Here is Delilah's story. She's right in the middle of A Level exams and getting in some fundraising for her next adventure.

We have many different pathways being followed when our Upper Sixth leave us to take their next steps into the world so we try to let them experience as many skills as possible for whatever they may do.

We have a few pupils, following in the footsteps of some of our alumni, going off to various destinations to support @projecttrust. Project Trust's mission is to empower young people to develop their confidence, resilience, and leadership skills through long-term international volunteering experiences. By engaging in cross-cultural exchange, volunteers make a positive impact in host communities and return home as responsible, active global citizens.

We'll be bringing you a few pupils' upcoming trips over the next few days. Support Delilah via her Just Giving page - link in our Linktree in bio above

It's heating up all round but at Exeter School we ensure our pupils are Real-World Ready and take fire safety seriously.

Our L6 RAF cadets got hands on last week in a fire extinguisher practical. Ensuring they do this safely and keep a level head and themselves safe if faced with the real thing was all important.
