Junior Reflections 6 February 2026
Dear parents,
The first signs of Spring are nearly here with snowdrops appearing and daffodils in the shops, and I have to admit I am rather pleased that January has finished, although the rain still doesn’t seem to want to disappear.
Monday’s assembly was all about how we can look after ourselves, from food to staying healthy both physically and mentally. I shared a picture of a smile, and the pupils quickly picked up that laughter and smiling is a very quick fix to making you feel better. I also had the pleasure of leading the Upper School assembly on Thursday where we had a larger discussion with some role play thrown in for good measure. We spoke about our behaviour guidelines and how it is important that everyone does their absolute best to follow them. This makes for a safe and happy school; we know that sometimes things can go wrong but that’s when we say sorry! A large part of the discussion was about poor physical behaviour and that this is NOT tolerated at Exeter School. I was so proud of the mature contributions the pupils gave, with extremely thoughtful and sensible answers and ideas being offered. Well done, Upper School.
Following this theme Mrs Conway Clifton held the first School Council meeting of the Spring term. Pupils discussed how to make Playground Person of the Week fair, inclusive, and motivating, offering well considered ideas for new rewards. They also reflected positively on how sanctions support respectful behaviour and how expectations could be reinforced. Finally, the council talked about looking after shared spaces, highlighting the importance of safety, privacy, and caring for our school environment and the people who maintain it. It was a thoughtful and productive meeting where the pupils’ voices were heard.
On Wednesday evening, Mr Fennemore, supported by Mr Wood and Mr Evans from junior school, led an engaging parental forum focused on our ‘Shape of the Week’ changes coming into effect this September. Parents explored the implications of the key developments in both parts of the school, including the move to one-hour lessons and a two-week timetable for the senior school. Thank you to all those who attended and contributed so thoughtfully; your input is invaluable in helping us ensure these changes are as successful as possible. You can read more about it here.
Yesterday, the pupils got off to a good start in our first competitive esports game against Twickenham Prep in the Capture the Flag IAPS competition. The team won both matches: the first 4-2; the second 13-2. They are looking forward to two matches next week as they will be looking to play Donhead Prep on Tuesday, as well as their upcoming league match on Thursday. Well done to all involved.
As I finish this newsletter, I am putting on my wellies and dry robe and heading over to Blundell’s to cheer on the U11 boys Hockey team who are competing in the Devon Finals tournament. I will keep you posted on how they faired next week.
Wishing you a good weekend.
