eNewsletter – December 2025

The past term has been, as ever, a busy and exciting one. It has been Graham Bone’s first as Acting Head, and we are very pleased to share a message from him below. Our sports teams have been in full swing, and the drama department has been hard at work in the lead-up to the senior school production of Grease – more on this below. Our art scholars have been getting inspired by the school archives – explore their responses to this fantastic resource below. We have also enjoyed a number of musical highlights, including another memorable evening at Exeter Cathedral, where the junior and senior school choirs sang beautifully at Hospiscare’s Light Up a Life service.

Looking ahead to next year, there are many alumni events to look forward to. We hope you will consider joining us for the Exonian Lecture in February – an opportunity to discover what made Blue Peter one of the BBC’s most popular programmes for so many decades. Alongside these events, there are numerous ways to share your expertise and volunteer at the school; it’s always a pleasure to welcome back alumni who generously pass on their knowledge to today’s pupils.

Last but by no means least, thank you to all who have generously supported the next generation of Exonians with a gift this year. Do take a look at our first ever philanthropy impact report, below, to get a sense of the difference giving to the school can make.

I hope you have a peaceful and joyful festive season, and a very happy New Year.

Graham Bone’s Christmas Message

Giving to the Bursary Fund

The words of a Middle Fifth bursary award holder remind us of the importance of a good education. As we reach a time of year that often encourages reflection, we invite our wonderful alumni community to think back on your own years at Exeter School – your classmates, teachers, opportunities outside the classroom and all those experiences which have shaped who you are today. With all this in mind, we hope you will consider donating to the Exeter School bursary fund. Your gift will give a young person the chance to flourish and enjoy an education that would not otherwise be available to them.

Did you know… Exeter School is a registered charity? Leaving just £1,000 in your Will could save £400 in inheritance tax. Even a 1% gift means your loved ones still receive 99% or more. It’s a small gesture that can make a big difference. If you can help change a child’s future by supporting the bursary fund, please click on the button below. Thank you.

It’s electrifying!

The senior school production of Grease has been an absolute triumph this term; with a matter of months to manifest a full production, the dedication of the pupils making up two casts and all those that support the play is mind boggling. Head of Drama, James Brough, shared his thoughts with us. “They were a fantastic cast and crew to work with – they always are at Exeter School, but this group worked particularly well together and entered the rehearsal space every day with a smile on their faces. It was also great to sell out all four performances – it is always a great atmosphere for the cast and crew to have a full house. Seeing people who have never been on stage before grow in confidence and discover a new found love of drama always feels like a win, and to also see established performers and pupils of the school integrate and embrace the new pupils so warmly is fantastic.”

Remembering Poland’s history

Pupils from Middle Fifth and Upper Fifth recently travelled to Kraków for the school’s Poland Character Trip. The visit began with a tour of Kraków’s Jewish Quarter and a visit to the Galicia Gallery, where students had the opportunity to hear firsthand from a Holocaust survivor and learn about Jewish life in pre-war Poland. The group then spent a solemn and reflective morning at the sites of the former Auschwitz‑Birkenau Memorial and Museum, before exploring Kraków’s historic centre, including a visit to St. Mary’s Basilica, Kraków.

On day three, students descended into the Wieliczka Salt Mine – home to one of the largest underground chapels in the world – and toured Wawel Castle, learning more about Poland’s rich history. The visit concluded with some time to explore the city centre before returning home. The trip offered pupils a meaningful opportunity to deepen their understanding of European history and reflect on the legacy of the Holocaust.

Junior School hockey success

Exeter Junior School’s U11 girls’ hockey team have been enjoying a fantastic run. At the IAPS regional tournament at Millfield, they were unstoppable – winning every match and not conceding a single goal, finishing with a confident 2-0 victory over the hosts in the final. Their superb form continued at Haileybury, where they secured a remarkable third place at the IAPS National Finals.

Confused… not in the slightest

Steve Dukes (1992-1997) who has the huge role of CEO at Confused.com recently visited the school to talk in a senior school assembly and share his experiences of leading a large, digital business and the importance of learning. Steve confessed that he wasn’t interested in learning at school, but in his working life he has taken a different approach, “learning fast and acting on it” and has perfected asking questions, whether they be “stupid, difficult or new.”

Archive exhibition

Head of Art and Design, Jen Brewer, and current Upper Sixth pupil Lily, who works diligently as our Library and Archive Prefect, recently collaborated to bring art scholars together to create an archive exhibition. Jen explains how this came about and how much the exhibition was enjoyed by visitors, “the scholars visited the archive, where they photographed an artefact that resonated with them personally. They then created a response to their chosen piece in a medium of their choice. The resulting works showcased an impressive range of creativity. The exhibition was a resounding success, attracting parents and visitors with an interest in the archive. It was a wonderful evening filled with engaging conversations and inspiring creativity.”

Battlefields trip

Lower Fifth pupils visited Belgium and northern France on the annual Battlefields Trip, exploring key sites of the First World War. Starting at Essex Farm Cemetery and continuing through locations around Ypres and the Somme, pupils gained a powerful sense of the scale and impact of the conflict. At Thiepval and Vimy Ridge, they located the names of Old Exonians Robert E. Paramore (1906–1914) and Laurence C. D. Eliot (1904–1906), laying crosses in their memory. They also visited the grave of Old Exonian Lieutenant Richard Kellock Stirling (1902–1911) at Sanctuary Wood Cemetery, marking the moment with a reading of Vera Brittain’s ‘Perhaps’.

Identifying alumni

In this new feature we are seeking your help! Asking… are you able to identify anyone in this photo? We know it’s the 2nd XI hockey team in 1982, but can’t place every person. Should you see someone you recognise, and remember their full name, please do let us know who you’ve spotted!

I know who that is

Alumni seeking alumni

The Alumni and Development office is here to help OEs stay in touch, and sometimes we’re asked to seek out a particular member of the alumni community. Please don’t hesitate to email us if you’re trying to find someone you once knew.

Finding alumni

Last week’s Christmas Carol Service at Exeter Cathedral was a truly special occasion for the whole school. It was an opportunity to sing carols, share readings and reflect on the year. The service was made all the more special by the appearance of two members of our alumni community. Peter German (1964-1972) and Robin Thomas (1964-1971) both attended the service, welcoming pupils and staff as they arrived. They are volunteers at the cathedral and kindly requested this slot on the rota. Thank you both for helping to make the event even more joyful. #ExeterSchoolAlumni
With the festive season now upon us, the school is filled with cheer as we look ahead to a busy calendar of December events. Final rehearsals are underway for this week’s Grease performances, and preparations for our upcoming concerts are in full swing. While December is always a lively time, it is also a chance to reconnect with fond memories and reflect on the moments that have stayed with us over the years. We would love to hear your memories of Christmas at Exeter School — please share them in the comments or send us a message. #ExeterSchoolAlumni #MondayMemories #SeasonOfSharing #FestiveMemories #SchoolMemories #FestiveSeason
🎄We’d like to invite you to our advent carol service in the school chapel this Sunday, 5pm, followed by mulled wine and mince pies. It would be great to kick off the festive season with as many of our community as possible so we hope to see you there! ☺️

Les May (staff, 1974–2007) fondly recalls the dedication behind Exeter School’s early overseas rugby tours; “The first overseas tour to Canada was a rugby venture in 1989 – followed by another in 1993... Rugby shows, dinners, speaker nights, even 1st XV 'Calendar Boys' calendars helped raise funds. No student was denied a place because parents couldn't afford it. "A rugby tour is far more than two or three weeks abroad. For many it is their defining school memory. For me, it was an honour and a privilege.” Were you part of a tour or helped fundraise? We’d love to hear your stories below! ⬇️ #ExeterSchoolAlumni #ExeterSchool #RugbyTourMemories #SchoolRugby #ThrowbackRugby
For the last issue of The 1633 magazine, we thoroughly enjoyed hearing from alumni who met their significant other at school and are still together today – some now with families of their own! 😄🥰 We know there are more incredible stories out there, and we’d be delighted to hear them. Whether you met in sixth form, on the sports field or during a school production, if Exeter School was the start of your love story, please get in touch ⌨🤗 Comment below or email Ali, amcg@exeterschool.org.uk – we would love to feature your story in the next edition of The 1633. #ExeterSchoolAlumni #ExeterSchool #schoolmatestosoulmates #enduringlove #exoniansinlove
Blustery winds sweeping through Exeter School today - autumn has definitely arrived 🍂🧣 #ExeterSchoolAlumni #ExeterSchool #changingseasons #autumncolours
We are deeply saddened to learn of the death of Captain Elizabeth (Lizzie) Godwin, who attended Exeter School from 2004 to 2013. Lizzie joined the school at the age of seven and is remembered for her warmth, energy and determination. Lizzie’s life was marked by courage, service and integrity. She will be remembered with admiration and affection by all who knew her at Exeter School.
The class of 1994 might remember Matthew Candy (1989-1994) and Iain McGuire (1987-1994) who left @exeterschooluk after their A Levels. Having not seen each other in more than 25 years, they have, for the past year, been studying a post graduate diploma in Artificial Intelligence for Business at @oxfordsbs. Here they are at their graduation ceremony this summer at The Sheldonian Theatre. What makes this even more special is that Iain (left in picture) now lives in Sydney so it was great that he made the ceremony in person. Congratulations Matt and Iain and we hope they stay in touch with where their new qualifications take them! #ExeterSchoolAlumni #onceanexonian #oxfordgraduation #sheldoniantheatre #alumnioverseas #classof1994 #artificialintelligence #sydney
Alumni seeking alumni! Tim Laney (1966–1977), after a distinguished career as Head of Science at @kesbath, has embraced retirement by leading guided trail running groups both in the UK and overseas. Still passionate about adventure and education, Tim continues to support Ten Tors teams and would love to reconnect with fellow OEs from his era. Tim says, “I would be very happy to hear from any other OEs of my vintage!"… so please do get in touch with us and we will put you in touch with Tim. In another alumni search, David Welch (1953–1957) is hoping to locate Gilbert "Gil" Molland (1951–1958). If you have any information about Gil, please get in touch with the Alumni and Development office – alumni@exeterschool.org.uk. #ExeterSchoolAlumni #onceanexonian #tentors #alumniseekingalumni
