The role

At Exeter School, our unwavering commitment to nurturing the character of our pupils is the cornerstone of our educational philosophy. Inspired by the teachings of Aristotle, our school ethos is firmly rooted in virtue ethics, fostering aspirations and flourishing in all aspects of our pupils’ lives. Our objective is to equip pupils with the practical wisdom needed to navigate the challenges and seize the opportunities in our fast-paced and ever-evolving world, all while celebrating their unique talents and individuality. We expect our pupils to embody the school virtues throughout their time at Exeter School, embracing the rich and diverse opportunities presented to them.

To strengthen our dedication to character education, we are introducing a new senior leadership position: Director of Learning and Teaching. This role will further ensure that the quality of pupil learning remains a central focus, with dedicated support for staff in our ongoing mission to enhance both pupil learning and their own professional practice.

We are looking for individuals who share our passion for high standards in pupil learning, incorporating innovation and reflective practice and the continued work of embedding character education in an academic context. Applicants will be forward thinking with regard current changes in education and understand how academic data management can be beneficial to all concerned. They will have proven leadership experience including change operational management.

As well as personally providing the highest quality of teaching, we seek applications from those who are skilled in supporting staff professional development and providing supportive and informative line management. With the changes in technology this post will also have oversight and line management of the technology for learning forum as well as the learning support department.

As a crucial member of the school’s senior leadership team, this position will actively engage with and support the implementation of the school’s strategic plan, contributing to the overall leadership and success of the school.

The senior school

Our senior school is a diverse, co-educational day school of approximately 770 pupils split across five classes of each year level, offering great opportunities to grow and develop in the formative years between 11 and 18. To strengthen our purpose to aspire and flourish, pupils are also allocated a house team which fosters belonging, values unique contributions and seeks to challenge the individual beyond current expectations within a nurturing and collaborative environment.

At Exeter School we continue to develop the academic, personal and physical potential of each pupil in the school and we believe in the development of the whole pupil. The school’s academic and pastoral teams operate side by side to monitor, guide and support pupils and to ensure that parents are well informed. We believe that happy, healthy pupils make the best progress in all areas of school life.

Exeter School takes a 7 – 18 view in planning the academic curriculum. The large number of additional opportunities for academic enrichment is of great value and participation is encouraged and enjoyed by many of our pupils.

The development of study skills, independent thought and personal reflection is a key factor in making excellent academic progress and is embedded in all that we do.

Pupils enjoy academic success in GCSEs, A Levels, BTEC and university admissions as a result of high levels of personal application twinned with support from dedicated and professional teachers. We enjoy a well-stocked library that provides an exciting modern resource centre to support pupils both in their academic work and in their extra-curricular activities and interests. In addition to all pupils and staff having a school-managed iPad, there are dedicated computer science rooms available to pupils with additional computers in the library, sixth form study room, design technology suite, music, and art departments.
