Exeter School is celebrating a wonderful summer achievement from one of our pupils, Seth, who took on a mile-long open water swim around Burgh Island to raise money for men’s cancer charity, the Chestnut Appeal.
Seth, who joins Third Form this September after a successful year in Upper Two, completed the swim in 38 minutes, battling the unpredictable Devon coastline to reach his goal. It was a challenge that tested more than just his swimming ability — it tested his patience too.
Third Time Lucky
The swim had already been postponed twice over the summer holidays due to windy and unsafe sea conditions. Rather than losing motivation, Seth stayed determined, and his persistence paid off when calmer waters finally allowed the swim to go ahead. Setting off from the shore, Seth swam steadily around the iconic Burgh Island, a landmark familiar to many Devon families, before completing the full mile in an impressive time.
Swimming for a Cause Close to Home
The Chestnut Appeal supports men affected by cancer, and the cause holds real significance for Seth and his family. His grandad is a cancer survivor, and when a neighbour invited Seth to take part, he did not hesitate. When Seth was asked why he wanted to join, his answer was simple: he was swimming for his grandad.
That personal connection gave the challenge extra meaning, and it shone through in the determination Seth showed on the day.
A Fantastic Fundraising Effort
So far, Seth has raised £470 for the Chestnut Appeal, with sponsorship donations still coming in. It is a fantastic total for a young swimmer taking on his first open water charity challenge, and a brilliant example of the community spirit we love to see in our pupils.
Everyone at Exeter School is incredibly proud of Seth’s achievement over the summer break. We look forward to welcoming him into Third Form this September and hearing all about his next adventure.
