What does it take to swim the length of the English Channel without leaving Devon? For 18 Exeter School swimmers, it meant an unforgettable night of endurance, teamwork and community spirit.
From 8pm on Thursday 12 June until 8am on Friday 13 June, three teams of six pupils took on the ambitious Channel Challenge, swimming the equivalent distance of the English Channel – an incredible 33.9 kilometres – in relay format. Held at the open-air Topsham Pool, the event saw pupils camp poolside before taking turns to swim one-hour relay legs through the night.
Beneath clear skies and with the encouragement of teammates, staff and supporters, every swimmer played their part in ensuring all three teams reached their goal. Throughout the challenge, pupils encouraged one another, maintained an impressive pace and demonstrated the resilience, kindness and collaboration that are central to life at Exeter School.
The fastest team completed the full Channel distance in an outstanding 10 hours and 41 minutes, while every team successfully finished the challenge before the 12-hour event came to a close.
Several of the event’s lifeguards also stepped into the water to complete guest relay swims, helping to cover a handful of vacant slots and ensuring the challenge continued seamlessly.
The Channel Challenge was about much more than distance. Together, the swimmers raised an impressive £1,348 for Hospiscare, one of Exeter School’s chosen charities.
The funds will help support the charity’s outstanding work providing specialist care and support to people living with terminal illness and their families across Exeter, Mid and East Devon.
While the swimmers were at the heart of the event, the challenge could only take place thanks to the commitment of the wider Exeter School community.

We are equally grateful to the Exeter School staff who volunteered across the 12-hour challenge, keeping spirits high and cheering pupils on through every relay. Special thanks also go to the team at Topsham Pool, who remained on site for the entire event and provided invaluable support from start to finish.
The Channel Challenge perfectly captured what makes an Exeter School education so distinctive. It combined ambition with compassion, encouraged pupils to push beyond their comfort zones and demonstrated the power of working together towards a shared goal.
