Lower Two pupil Alastair has shown outstanding determination by completing a sponsored 22-mile swim in aid of Diabetes UK, raising money for a cause that is especially close to his family’s heart.
Over the course of three months, between 22 April and 22 June, Alastair set himself the ambitious goal of swimming 22 miles – the equivalent distance of crossing the English Channel. The challenge required months of commitment, perseverance and careful planning, as he steadily worked towards his target one swim at a time.
Alastair chose to support Diabetes UK in honour of his grandparents. His grandmother who lives with type 1 diabetes, while his grandfather sadly passed away several years ago due to complications of type 2 diabetes. Wanting to make a positive difference, Alastair dedicated his challenge to raising both funds and awareness for a charity that has had a significant impact on his family.
To complete the challenge, Alastair spent countless hours training in local swimming pools and in the sea, demonstrating remarkable dedication alongside his school commitments and other activities. Each session brought him one step closer to his goal, but the journey was far from easy. Like any endurance challenge, there were times when the finish line felt a long way off and moments when he questioned whether he would be able to complete the full 22 miles.
Rather than giving up, Alastair continued to push himself, drawing on his resilience and determination to keep going. His efforts culminated in a memorable final swim during a training session in Sidmouth with his surf lifesaving club. Needing one last push to complete the challenge, Alastair swam an incredible 70 lengths, officially reaching the symbolic shores of France and bringing three months of hard work to a successful close.
Reaching the end of the challenge was a tremendous achievement, made even more meaningful by the personal motivation behind it. Through his fundraising, Alastair has helped support the vital work of Diabetes UK while honouring the memory of his grandparents in a truly inspiring way.
Everyone at Exeter School is incredibly proud of Alastair’s achievement. His compassion, commitment and perseverance are a wonderful reflection of the values we encourage in our pupils, and his willingness to take on such a demanding challenge for the benefit of others is something to be celebrated.
Congratulations, Alastair, on completing an inspiring challenge and making a real difference for such an important cause. We hope those well-earned celebratory croissants taste every bit as good as reaching the finish line!
