Pupils Swim the Length of the English Channel in Marathon Overnight Relay

Eighteen Exeter School pupils demonstrated remarkable resilience, teamwork and determination as they completed an overnight Channel Challenge at Topsham Pool, raising vital funds for Hospice Care in Exeter.

Under clear night skies from 8.00pm on 12 June until 8.00am on 13 June, three teams of six swimmers took on the ambitious challenge of swimming the equivalent distance of the English Channel – an impressive 33.9 kilometres.

The event saw pupils swimming relay legs of one hour throughout the night, with participants camping poolside between swims. Despite the physical and mental demands of the challenge, every swimmer showed exceptional commitment and supported one another throughout the 12-hour endurance event.

Teamwork and Determination on Display

The atmosphere at Topsham Pool was one of encouragement, camaraderie and perseverance as pupils worked together to maintain a steady pace through the night. Every team successfully completed the full Channel distance, with the fastest team recording an outstanding time of just 10 hours and 41 minutes.

The challenge highlighted not only the swimmers’ physical endurance but also the strength of the Exeter School community, with pupils motivating one another through the small hours and celebrating each milestone together.

Supporting Hospiscare in Exeter

As well as testing themselves in the pool, the swimmers were raising money for Hospiscare in Exeter, one of Exeter School’s chosen charities.

The teams have currently raised an impressive £1,240, with donations continuing to support the charity’s important work caring for local families across the region.

A Community Effort

The success of the Channel Challenge was made possible by the dedication of a large team of staff and volunteers.

Special thanks go to the lifeguards who ensured the safety of swimmers throughout the night: Connie, Harry, Freddie, Will, Meighan, Gracie, Seb and Tom. Several lifeguards also stepped into the water to cover guest swim slots and help teams maintain their relay schedule.

The school is equally grateful to the members of staff who gave up their time overnight to supervise the event, keep spirits high and encourage pupils throughout the challenge.

Thanks also go to the team at Topsham Pool, whose support and commitment over the full 12 hours helped make the event possible.

An Unforgettable Night

The overnight Channel Challenge was a memorable demonstration of Exeter School values in action. Through courage, perseverance, compassion and teamwork, the swimmers achieved an extraordinary collective goal while raising funds for an important local cause.

Congratulations to all involved on an outstanding achievement.
